Sleepy Hollow: The Witches Of The Western Wood #1 does a fantastic job of laying the groundwork for the legend of Sleepy Hollow while still feeling deeply personal and character-driven. Rather than jumping straight into supernatural horror, the issue takes its time building the atmosphere of the isolated community, showing the fears, traditions, and tensions that shape the town long before its darker reputation fully takes hold. That slower approach really works because it makes the eventual hints of witchcraft and magic feel more meaningful and dangerous.

Sarah immediately stands out as a compelling lead character. Through her eyes, we see a family struggling under the weight of fear, suspicion, and emotional strain. The relationship between her parents is particularly important to the emotional core of the story, especially as Sarah witnesses the treatment of her father and the painful consequences that follow. The family dynamic constantly shifts between moments of vulnerability, anger, and desperation, which gives the story a grounded human element even as supernatural themes begin to creep in.

What makes the issue especially effective is how it handles magic. The supernatural elements are present, but they are used carefully and sparingly. Instead of overwhelming the story with spectacle, the comic treats magic as something unsettling and unpredictable. Even actions done with good intentions can lead to devastating consequences, and the townspeople’s fear of anything unusual creates an oppressive atmosphere throughout the issue. That tension among fear, faith, and superstition gives the story real weight and lays the foundation for the darker mythology Sleepy Hollow is known for.

Visually, the book captures its historical setting incredibly well. The artwork has a strong period feel that immerses you in the world immediately, from the clothing and environments to the town's darker, shadow-filled mood. The visual storytelling works hand in hand with the pacing, allowing quiet emotional moments and ominous scenes alike to leave an impact. There’s a haunting quality to many of the panels that perfectly suits the series' tone.

By the time the final pages arrive, the story begins to hint at something much larger looming over both Sarah’s family and the town itself. The closing panels do an excellent job of setting up the broader mystery and supernatural conflict to come, leaving plenty of intrigue for the next issue while still making this debut feel complete and satisfying on its own.

I love a good anthology, and this fantasy epic of Savage Tales really hit the spot with me. There is a good mix of characters, too. I knew and read Red Sonja, and had heard of Vampirella and Alan Quatermain, and had a good introduction to the story of Gullivar of Mars.

They had a good mix of stories, with some decent action and clever ways to introduce the characters to new readers looking for adventure.

The artwork throughout from all the artists was spot on, with some nice scenes that stick in the mind.

A great pick-up for fans of these classic characters!

51 #2 from Mad Cave Studios keeps piling on the madness in the best possible way, expanding the strange world introduced in the first issue while leaning even harder into the mix of sci-fi mystery and offbeat humour. The biggest reveal this time around is the origin of the alien living on Earth, and it adds another layer to an already chaotic story that feels like it could spiral completely out of control at any moment. Despite all the insanity, the series still manages to stay engaging because there’s clearly a bigger mystery unfolding underneath the humour and violence.

What really stands out is how naturally the comedy fits into the story. Small throwaway moments — from jokes about killing interns to the hilarious naming of the oversized weaponry — give the issue a playful tone that stops it from becoming too heavy. The humour never feels forced either; instead, it works as part of the world-building and helps define the personalities of the cast. Even during tense scenes, there’s usually some ridiculous detail or line that reminds you this book doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Gord’s storyline is especially well handled here. His backstory and involvement are woven cleverly into the central investigation, making his role feel important rather than just a side diversion. The writing does a good job of balancing character development with the larger mystery, and there are moments where the emotional and more grounded aspects begin to come through. That said, every time the story starts to settle into something more serious, it gets smashed apart by another bizarre reveal, outrageous action beat, or strange sci-fi concept. That contrast between grounded character moments and complete absurdity is a huge part of the book’s charm.

Visually, the issue continues to impress. The artwork captures the grim atmosphere of the small-town setting while still making room for the more outrageous alien elements and over-the-top technology. The darker colour palette gives the town a worn, uneasy feeling, which contrasts nicely with the brighter and more chaotic sci-fi visuals. The colouring in particular helps sell both sides of the story, blending shadowy environments with flashes of strange alien energy and bizarre machinery. Altogether, the visuals reinforce the tone perfectly, helping the horror, comedy, and science-fiction elements all coexist without clashing.

Honor and Curse: Eternal #2 from Mad Cave Studios takes everything established in the first issue and pushes it several steps further, delivering a much more intense and action-heavy chapter while continuing to build the larger mystery in the background. The pacing feels faster this time, with tension constantly rising as the violence escalates and the true dangers surrounding Genshi become clearer.

The action sequences are easily one of the strongest parts of the issue. Genshi is incredibly effective against ordinary soldiers, and the book does a great job of showing just how skilled and dangerous he is without resorting to excessive dialogue or exposition. His movements feel precise and calculated, making every fight sequence engaging to follow. There’s a confidence to the way he handles standard enemies that makes him feel almost unstoppable at first.

That changes quickly once the augmented super soldier enters the picture. The threat level jumps immediately, and the fights become far more brutal and desperate. This is where the issue really shines because it forces Genshi into a position where skill alone may not be enough. The story digs deeper into the power he carries within himself and the emotional and physical cost of unleashing it. There’s a real sense that every time he taps into that darker side, he risks losing a piece of himself in the process.

What makes that struggle interesting is that Genshi’s reluctance to fully embrace his power feels completely understandable. His hesitation doesn’t come across as weakness but as someone trying to hold onto control and morality despite the circumstances around him. His intentions may genuinely be noble, but the issue strongly suggests that trying to suppress or contain that darkness could backfire on him. The idea that good intentions can still lead someone down a destructive path hangs heavily over the story, giving the character conflict more weight beyond the action itself.

At the same time, the book continues teasing the larger force operating behind the scenes. There’s a growing sense that someone is manipulating events from the shadows, and the mystery surrounding that figure or organisation becomes even more intriguing here. While this issue focuses heavily on combat and survival, it also feels like it’s laying the groundwork for a much bigger confrontation later in the series.

The artwork complements the tone perfectly. The violence is raw, bloody, and unforgiving, but it never feels excessive for the sake of shock alone. Instead, the visuals reinforce how dangerous and painful these encounters really are. The colouring choices stand out as well, using contrast and lighting to heighten the atmosphere during both the quieter moments and the explosive action scenes. Some of the panel layouts and camera angles are especially effective during combat, helping the fights feel dynamic and impactful without becoming confusing to follow. Altogether, the visuals and storytelling work together to create an issue that feels intense, brutal, and emotionally charged from beginning to end.

The comic captures the chaos of modern reporting incredibly well, showing how quickly narratives can spread and spiral beyond anyone’s control. It’s a clever touch that grounds the more dramatic elements of the story in something very familiar and recognisable.

As the issue progresses, though, it becomes clear that the story is operating on a much bigger scale than it first appeared. The stakes rise dramatically, and the escalation feels explosive both literally and figuratively. Every new revelation hints that there are larger forces at work behind the scenes, and the sense of conspiracy and danger deepens with each page. Kirby suddenly finds himself trapped in the middle of something far beyond a simple news story, and that growing pressure gives the issue a constant feeling of urgency.

The pacing is handled especially well throughout. Some scenes move at a frantic speed, throwing information, danger, and emotional reactions at the reader in rapid succession, while other moments deliberately slow things down to let the characters breathe, and the mystery develop further. Those quieter sections are important because they provide additional context, character insight, and subtle clues about what may really be happening. The balance between chaos and quieter storytelling helps the issue avoid feeling overwhelming despite how much is happening.

The characters themselves also continue to become more intriguing. While Kirby remains the central focus, there’s a strong sense that several supporting characters are hiding more than they reveal. Their motivations and connections still feel partially obscured, which adds another layer to the unfolding mystery. Rather than answering too many questions too early, the issue smartly deepens the uncertainty and keeps the reader guessing about who can actually be trusted.

Visually, the artwork does a great job of supporting the story's modern, fast-moving nature. The layouts involving social media posts, feeds, and online reactions are particularly effective, helping immerse the reader in the nonstop digital noise surrounding Kirby’s investigation. Instead of feeling distracting, those design choices become part of the storytelling itself, reinforcing the themes of media influence, public reaction, and information overload. Combined with the strong pacing and escalating tension, the visuals help make this issue feel energetic, contemporary, and increasingly unpredictable.

For the second issue, this next chapter really manages to pack a lot in without feeling overcrowded, pushing both the character work and the wider plot forward in meaningful ways.

Alongside everything already unfolding, there are some sharp, well-placed political beats that add an extra layer of tension. These moments don’t just exist for flavour either—they actively steer the narrative toward a strong cliffhanger that ties neatly back into the earlier Exorcism storyline. It feels intentional and connected, rather than just a passing nod.

The royal side of things is especially compelling here. We see the king starting to grasp the true weight of the crown, and not just in the ceremonial sense. There’s a sense that the pressure is constant and inescapable, even in what should be routine situations. An unexpected, almost ambush-style interview and a series of high-profile events pile on the pressure, creating an environment where cracks can start to show. Theo, in particular, feels the strain, with hints of a possible relapse handled in a way that feels grounded rather than melodramatic. The people around him stepping in to support him add a human touch that balances the larger, more supernatural elements.

Speaking of which, the darker side of the story really begins to assert itself here. The curse hanging over the Royal Family no longer feels like a distant threat—it’s present, active, and increasingly difficult to ignore. There’s a sense that something bigger is looming, something that will affect not just individuals but the entire family unit. That escalation sets up a final issue that promises to be incredibly tense.

Visually, the issue continues to impress. The artwork and colouring do a great job of reinforcing the tone, especially in how they contrast the creeping darkness of the supernatural elements with the bright, almost artificial glare of public life—TV cameras, staged appearances, and grand events. That contrast helps underline the duality at the heart of the story: what’s seen versus what’s hidden.

Overall, this issue does a strong job of deepening both the personal and supernatural stakes while ensuring everything moves toward a payoff that feels earned.

Reflecting on the origins of the book, Jean Cremers said:

“I started making comics with my first album published by Éditions Le Lombard, Vague de froid/Cold Front, which didn’t earn me enough to make a living. I began looking for storyboard work, but that search was interrupted by floods that struck my village in July 2021. Three days after the water receded, I received an email from Robin Jolly, who would become my editor at Glénat. I wrote this story from that moment, drawing from both the disaster and my own transition into adulthood, which is why it takes place entirely on the water.

This album is my favorite of the three I’ve created. I wrote it quickly, trusted myself, and became deeply attached to the characters. It represents what I hope is the best side of my work: impulsive, fast-paced, and colorful.

More than anything, I hope it inspires readers to read more comics, a medium that brings together the best of words and art.”

Cremers, born in Liège in 1996, trained at Saint-Luc Liège and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he earned his Master’s degree in comics with great distinction. His work has already been recognized with the young talent grand prize at the Quai des Bulles festival in Saint-Malo.

This was an interesting one-shot story. Usually, these one-shots make a good issue to either reintroduce a character or maybe add some lore to the story. This does both.

First up, for new readers, you won’t get bogged down in an excess of history - it can be enjoyed without reading the previous story arc that is referred to in the issue. You get some classic Phantom action, complete with branding of villains and a packed issue.

Those who read the previous arc will have a little more knowledge of the characters and the reason why the Phantom is going after them.

In addition to this, there is a nice tease as to what the Phantom’s next adventure will be during a quieter recovery moment.

Combining this clever storytelling with some excellent art that shows the action well makes this an easy book to pick up and enjoy!

A bittersweet ending that was well worked. There is the possibility that some of the characters can be revisited in the future, too. This was an excellent shift in tone and story.

While the conversations are interesting in this arc, and this issue seems to do some excellent character building, it’s the final panel that makes this interesting and adds a darker tone to the story - really well played!

Some interesting aspects of the rebellion and the fight against the insurgents, while Silver gets better, it looks like we are going to see what this arc is all about - it should be an interesting battle!

I really enjoyed this Future Shock, although I could see where it was leading! There is some fun art and clever expressions, leading to an amusing finish - hardly any dialog too, which is a brave choice!

Out of the frying pan and into the fire! With an interesting setup and some new foes to deal with, things look grim. It feels very twisted, and I’m looking forward to finding out more here!

Amid all the chaos, key revelations begin to surface. Through Toro, Owen, Soren, and even the sentient weapons, we’re given fragments of memory and perspective that start to reshape how we understand everything that’s happening. These aren’t just throwaway moments—they actively challenge what we thought we knew about these characters. It raises an interesting underlying question: are these characters truly evolving, or are we just now seeing who they’ve always been?

The action itself is relentless, but it never feels overwhelming. Instead, it pulls you deeper into the world, especially as the lore continues to expand alongside the combat. The battle scenes are chaotic in the best sense—fast, brutal, and creatively staged. There’s a strong mix of visceral melee combat and magical elements, with plenty of gore that fits the tone of the series without feeling excessive for the sake of it.

Visually, the issue is just as strong. The artwork complements the story's intensity perfectly, especially in the tighter, underground setting. That confined environment adds a sense of pressure and immediacy to the fights, making everything feel more claustrophobic and dangerous. The use of colour and lettering is particularly effective, helping to convey emotion, highlight magical effects, and guide the reader through the more chaotic sequences without losing clarity.

Despite the large cast, the comic does a great job of giving each character their moment. No one feels sidelined, which is impressive given how much is going on. By the end, there’s a stronger sense of who these characters are and how they fit into the bigger picture.

Overall, this issue continues the series’ strong run. It deepens the lore, delivers intense and inventive action, and keeps the characters engaging throughout. It’s another standout entry that reinforces why this series remains such a compelling read.

We finally discover what’s become of Avril, and it quickly becomes clear that this story arc is pulling no punches. There’s a real sense of danger here—no one feels safe—and that tension adds weight to every scene. Keres, Skye, and Britney’s mission to rescue her is intense, but what stands out most is the underlying mystery taking shape. The connection to Keres is particularly intriguing; the fact that their enemy seems to know her hints at a deeper, more personal conflict that hasn’t yet fully surfaced.

The battle sequences are a real highlight. The way the characters’ abilities are combined makes for some visually striking and dynamic moments, and the artwork really gets a chance to shine here. Each character is given space to stand out, contributing meaningfully rather than getting lost in the action. It all builds to an ending that feels satisfying while still teasing what’s to come, especially with how neatly it ties into the Keres one-shot.

Meanwhile, the secondary storyline offers a different kind of tension. Mystere and Kalen Vale’s situation feels far more desperate, as they’re hunted by savage werewolves led by a particularly menacing alpha. There’s a raw, almost survival-horror edge to these scenes that contrasts nicely with the more power-driven conflict of the main group. After the groundwork laid in the first issue, this second instalment wastes no time picking up the pace. It drops you right into the thick of things, giving a much clearer sense that this island isn’t just mysterious—it’s actively dangerous, with multiple threats lurking beneath the surface.

Before the chaos fully kicks in, there’s a quieter but tense stretch leading up to the landing. Cliff and Betty are forced into close proximity, and you can feel the weight of everything left unsaid between them. Their history hangs in the air, making even small interactions feel loaded. That tension is only sharpened by Marco’s presence—Betty’s new boyfriend—whose confidence and interest in her create an awkward, slightly combustible dynamic with Cliff.

Once they reach the island, the tone shifts into exploration mixed with unease. The team hacking their way through dense jungle undergrowth is a great visual and sets up that classic adventure vibe, but it doesn’t take long for things to turn unsettling. The discovery of a dead dinosaur is a clever twist—it’s not the threat itself, but the implication behind it. Something strong enough to take down a creature like that is out there, and that question lingers ominously in the background.

Meanwhile, the cutaway to Betty and Marco on the beach adds a different kind of tension. Marco’s personality really comes through here, and not in a flattering way—his sleazy charm is played up effectively. There’s a slightly exaggerated, almost cartoonish edge to these scenes that fits the pulpy tone of the book, giving it a bit of humour while still reinforcing that he’s not exactly trustworthy.

From there, the issue kicks into full gear. Cliff finally gets to cut loose as the Rocketeer, taking to the skies to deal with a swarm of flying dinosaurs. The action sequences here are a highlight—fast, chaotic, and energetic, with a real sense of speed and danger. The aerial combat feels dynamic, and the added commentary helps ground the action without slowing it down.

That fight also serves as a clever distraction, pulling Cliff away just when things are about to escalate elsewhere. It’s a classic adventure storytelling move, and it leads neatly into the issue’s closing moments. The cliffhanger lands well, not just because of the immediate danger, but because it layers in more of those playful references the series has been sprinkling throughout—dinosaurs, intrepid reporters (with their iconic white dog), and even a nod to a certain pipe-smoking strongman.

Overall, this issue builds nicely on the first, balancing character tension, pulpy humour, and high-energy action. It keeps things moving while deepening the sense of mystery around the island, making it a thoroughly entertaining chapter that leaves you wanting to see what’s lurking around the next corner.

It builds naturally on what’s come before while still feeling like a complete and satisfying story in its own right. Throwing The Phantom up against the Sky Band is a great choice—they’re not just a generic group of villains, but a collection of individuals, each bringing their own distinct abilities and challenges to the table. That variety keeps the encounters fresh and forces The Phantom to constantly adapt, rather than relying on a single approach.

What really stands out, though, is how this story doesn’t just expand the world around The Phantom—it deepens him as a character. As he works his way through the Sky Band, you get a stronger sense of what drives him, what he stands for, and how seriously he takes the role he’s inherited. There’s a weight to his actions here that goes beyond simply stopping criminals; it’s about maintaining a legacy and reinforcing the idea of The Phantom as something larger than one man.

The progression through the Sky Band members is handled really well, giving us a steady stream of action without it ever feeling repetitive. Each confrontation has its own flavour, and there’s a real sense of momentum as he closes in on the leader. A key part of that is the use of his ring—the mark he leaves behind becomes more than just a calling card. It carries a psychological edge, and the reactions to it really sell that. It’s not just about defeat; it’s about what that mark represents, and how it lingers with those who receive it. That added layer makes those moments hit harder than a standard victory.

Interestingly, for a story centred around airborne enemies, the adventure itself feels surprisingly grounded. It doesn’t rely purely on high-flying spectacle; instead, it brings the action down to earth—and even into the water at one point—which helps keep things varied and tangible. That balance works in the story’s favour, making the stakes feel more immediate while still delivering on the promise of facing off against a group like the Sky Band.

The action sequences are a real highlight throughout. They’re clear, dynamic, and easy to follow, with each set piece building on the last. The artwork plays a huge role in that, perfectly matching the tone of the story. Whether it’s the intensity of the fights or the quieter, more character-driven moments, the visuals consistently reinforce what’s happening on the page and keep everything flowing smoothly.

By the time it all wraps up, you get a strong sense of closure on this particular conflict, but there’s also a subtle tease of what’s coming next. It’s a nice touch—nothing too heavy-handed, just enough to keep you curious about where The Phantom’s path leads from here.

Overall, it’s a clever, well-paced adventure that balances action with character work, while continuing to build on the mythology in a meaningful way.

HE’S BACK, AND HE’S A SPACE HERO!

As one-shot adventures go, this was an excellent read. Two very different stories and settings featuring a Minotaur!

First up is a far-future adventure with the Minotaur on a mission. Aided by a helpful (kind of) AI, his task is to destroy a power supply while being attacked by robotic foes. It’s some classic science-fiction cartoon adventure with flights, robots, robes covering faces - giving me a feel of the beginning of Return Of The Jedi - and some excellent action.

I like the way the threat level rises as the mission continues, with bigger and bigger targets. The artwork is very kinetic; once the attack begins, it is non-stop throughout the story.

In the second adventure, we get a change of style - along with the location. We are on Earth, and there is a nice twist to the tale as the Minotaur is tasked with defeating a science-fiction terrorist with her own plans. I like how it plays out and adds some Saturday-morning-style adventure to the story being told. There is some explosive art and some excellent reactions in this adventure.

In all, this is an excellent one-shot, and it makes me wonder if we will see more of these. I would happily read more of the adventures of the Minotaur in this format, or similar releases from Invader Comics.

Tom King and Dan Parent reunite for Jughead: Piemageddon one-shot from Archie Comics.

Archie’s best pal Jughead has a bottomless stomach that’s led to some serious hijinks over the course of Archie Comics' 85-year history, but nothing as catastrophic as what’s coming in July! Bestselling author Tom King (SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW) and legendary Archie artist Dan Parent will reunite for a pie-eating contest with far-reaching consequences in a slapstick adventure one-shot comic that could only be called JUGHEAD: PIEMAGEDDON.

“I wanted to write a comic that spoke not only to our time, but to all times—a comic that challenged facile definitions of love and literature by transcending those perpetual platonic shadows and revealing a priori the tragic and comedic conditions inherent to our own precious, dissected, humiliating, human condition.
