3MY Round-Up: Getting In The Routine
A welcome break has been and gone, now I'm back...
In The Beginning
I’m finding that I am slipping well back into the routine. Working on the comics news for all of you has come back naturally, and there have been some good comics to read and news to tell.
I need to get myself back in the flow of working on my next issue of Custard. I have notes written, and I know in my head what I want to do; it is just a case of getting it all together.
On a slightly related note, I recently attended a wedding in Tuscany, Italy. At the location of the wedding (a beautiful abandoned abbey), there is a sword thrust into a stone - something for a future issue, I think!
I’ve also been getting back into watching wrestling - WWE’s Clash At The Castle was on at a reasonable hour in the UK, and there were some excellent matches.
Although, what on earth is going on at AEW?
Comic News
Over on Kypsel is a new comic featuring some classic mash-ups. In this case the first one is a twisted story of Don Quixote Fights the War of the Worlds.
Lightning has struck the grand library, fusing history’s greatest books together! Familiar characters find themselves in unfamiliar situations, now. In this first match-up, it’s Cervantes’ Don Quixote colliding with H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, and all bets are off.
Scout Comics has picked up New Rat City. After two successful Kickstarter campaigns, it’s good to see this excellent series reaching a larger audience.
Previewed here and out now is Lower Your Sights from Mad Cave Studios. This is a benefit anthology for the conflict in Ukraine and has a whole host of creators. Check out some of my thoughts on reading this powerful book here.
Mad Cave Studios also previewed a new graphic novel - The Karman Line. Out in March 2023, with an all-star creative team for this space horror.
Dave West from Accent UK has joined up with Time Bomb Comics. They are building up their portfolio with some excellent titles. Dave has a Kickstarter running at the moment too!
Planning ahead, Ablaze Publishing has announced details of their releases at the end of this year and the beginning of 2023. With a good mix of genres to come.
Vault Comics has announced a new horror comic coming in October. Nightfall: Double Feature looks to be something great for the spooky season!
Round-Up
To spread my reading wings a little more, I’ve been trying to catch up on WebToon. Granted, this does mean a lot of binge-reading.
In between some of the less serious titles, such as Bluechair and Adventures of God, there are slightly longer-form stories I am reading.
Gepetto is an interesting story that I have just begun. Humans and Androids are not getting on, and a real Pinocchio is in this story (hence the name) I like the art, and the initial build is well done.
A hundred years ago, the genius inventor behind androids, Professor Gepetto, left behind a mysterious inheritance. After the war between humans and androids has ravaged the planet, androids start to break down and run out of time, while humans are struggling to survive in the lifeless wasteland that is Earth. A single blue-haired android left behind in the Professor's estate may be the key to solving the crises as decades-old plans are finally set into motion.
With a Squid Game feel, there is Zero Game. This looks more horror orientated, with a good start.
After the death of her parents, Hanna Yoo sees her life tumble out of control, until one day a mysterious email invites her to compete in Zero Game, where losing means death, but winning brings a big reward: the ability to reset your entire life and live it over again…this time without all the pain and suffering. In Zero Game, Hanna faces danger everywhere. But who can she trust? And how is her deceased father involved? Rivals beware: she may seem like a noob…but inside Zero Game, you underestimate Hanna Yoo at your own risk.
Crowdfunding
This week’s crowdfunding highlights include Happy Astronaut #1 over on Zoop by Matt Fife & Matt Rodgers. On Kickstarter, there is the Wasted Space Delux Edition from Vault Comics (it looks massive!) and Shed from Blue Fox Comics.
Spotlight
Check out my spotlight review of SPOOKIDS. I had featured this series long ago, and things have moved on since. It’s a fun read, with some excellent humour for old and young alike. It’s available as volumes (print and digital) or you can support the creator. Marc, on Ko-Fi.
Special Offers & Sales
Over on DriveThruComics there is an Aspen Comics sale.
There are some bargains with titles such as Fathom, Lolo XOXO, Artifact, and more. Check them out here.
Received
A couple of excellent received items.
First up is Reverend Cross: You Only Die Twice.
100 page, black and white, horror/action/adventure/fun graphic novel book featuring Reverend Abby Cross, the female vicar action hero!
An excellent read, with some great ideas. I love the style of this all and the adventures within. Check out Reverend Cross here.
And I also got a big hardback book - Chimera.
Hybrid fusions of creature & technology, created by an AI called SATYR 'for the safety & protection of all'.
In these 60 pages are a wide selection of hybrid creatures with augmented technology. There are some scary and interesting ideas here, and this is a great read with some amazing illustrations.
Check out the details and get your own here.
Reviews
This new story arc from Image Comics hits the middle point in Prodigy: The Icarus Society #3. There is some intriguing storytelling here, and I look forward to seeing where this goes.
I was lucky enough to read an advance review of the graphic novel Shed from Blue Fox Comics. It’s live now on Kickstarter and worth checking out.
Also funding on Kickstarter, whilst being available digitally from GlobalComix is Amputation Captital. I had read the first issue and have seen the series through to the end. It’s an excellent story, with the twists you would come to expect from TPub.
Some story arcs end in 2000 AD - Prog 2299 from Rebellion. It will be interesting to see what comes next!
