IDW Publishing has two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issues out now - the latest issue of the main series and The Armageddon Game continues in The Alliance.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #134
With his brothers away on their own missions, Donatello must seek special help to protect a new friend-Regenta Seri of the Triceratons-who's being hunted by Utrom assassins hellbent on destroying her people. Meanwhile, Jennika has her hands full maintaining law and order and trust in Mutant Town in the wake of the mutant terrorist attacks in NYC.
Writer: Sophie Campbell, Artist: Pablo Tunica, Cover Artist: Faro Pe, Variant Cover Artist: Kevin Eastman, Variant Cover Artist: Erik Whalen
Jennika is having trouble as the fallout from the attack on Stockman continues, and things are not looking good in Mutant Town. The attacks are mayhem in the town, and I like how it all pans out. Donatello has his own tasks to do and makes a discovery - one that adds to the problems and is outside of the Armageddon Game.
The twists and turns here are well done, and that final panel was pretty creepy. I was glad to see Casey Jones in this issue.
I enjoyed the art in this - it shows the chaos in town well and has some well-played-out action sequences. Venus remains a variable, and it will be interesting to see where she fits in.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Armageddon Game - The Alliance #1
KARAI! Tasked by her estranged grandfather, the Shredder, to protect New York City, Oroku Karai faces her first true test as master of the Foot Clan when four mysterious mutant ninja turtles unleash seemingly random acts of violence against the city. The Armageddon Game has begun, and the rules have changed. Will Karai have what it takes to play her part and lead her forces against these strange new threats, especially when some of her own mutant allies are questioning what side the Foot Clan should be playing for in the first place?
Writer: Erik Burnham, Artist, Cover Artist: Roi Mercado, Variant Cover Artist: Ariel Medel
This was a fascinating read that kept me hooked throughout. Karia is building as a character, and her way within the Foot is growing. I like the slow start and the visit from the past in her dreams, which kickstarts the story well.
The action is excellent - taking on these ‘false’ turtles and the battle between them - combined with Donatello’s discovery, makes me think, and I don’t know where this is leading…
this starts off well and has a good mission statement - the ending is the beginning and something I can imagine will go beyond the current storyline.
