Currently, funding on Kickstarter is Lineage: Daughter-in-Law, a new horror comic from Fang Fang Comics.
A beautiful reporter gets trapped in a Chinatown mansion that's hungry for fresh blood.
Nora a reporter rushes through Chinatown on her way to interview an elderly woman living in a peculiar mansion swirling with strange rumors. When elements of the woman's story don't seem to square with the facts, the dark reality of the house reveals itself: the scoop of a lifetime......
Jumping into this cleverly constructed story, we have stories within stories, even as our reporter delves into the mystery and who and why.
Starting in the far past, we have our initial storyteller, explaining on how she came to be where she is and what went with that. It is cleverly played out with some excellent use of the differences between the West and China. There is some history in here, too, with another story being told - the history and the mythos behind the house.
As we run towards the modern day, the reporter has more problems. She can’t escape what is coming for her in more ways than one. Her naivety is well played out here, and her attempts fall on deaf ears (and possibly may cause more trouble for her).
As a storytelling technique, it is incredibly well told - and shown - and I love the levels of suspense you work your way through the story. This really keeps you wondering and turning the page through the story.
The art is fantastic, with some excellent use of light. There is darkness there, too, and that is done suddenly and sneaks up on you well - the darkness represents something more, and the use of it and shadows are especially well done. I love the characters' facial expressions within this as things are revealed, too. There are some excellent background scenes with people, landscapes and shadows. It's all well done and bursting off the page.
This excellent, classic horror story brings some brilliant elements together to craft something special and worth backing on Kickstarter!
