Coming to Kickstarter in February 2023 from Blue Fox Comics is The InSpectres Volume One. A paranormal adventure graphic novel set in England during the Late Victorian era, I had the chance to check out the beginning of a new story.
What if Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini, Bram Stoker, and ten-year old Agatha Christie banded together to solve the mystery of Spring Heeled Jackāthe legendary phantom that terrorized the streets of London. In doing so, they revived a secret society devoted to the investigation of the occult called The InSpectres, originally formed by Charles Dickens.
Script by Jarod Hunter Roe and drawn by David R Flores
A new adventure from Blue Fox Comics is a clever read that blurs the lines between what we know and what could be true.
In the beginning, I was wondering what to expect. Was this going to have false supernatural elements? Or would it be an all-out ghost story? What we get in this first part is something cunningly combining the two.
There are both parts for the sceptical and the believers among us with some good use of the mystical aspects - as well as in fitting with the setting - and the investigation, which builds on well with the characters involved.
The characters are well built up, and after the initial prologue, we gradually introduce them all. This is done cleverly, which feels natural and organic to the story.
We discover things as the characters do in bringing us along for the ride. I have my suspicions on some of the items, but some were disproven, and some are yet to be told. This is a good aspect of the story, and I found that it kept me hooked throughout.
As this mystery progresses, we find ourselves drawn into this mix of the detective stories of the era, along with the supernatural aspects as well.
The art works well with this too, with some excellent action, and ghostly goings-on. There are some creepy parts, and towards the end, there is some dark scenes.
This looks to be an intriguing beginning, and something for fans of mystery and the mystic to get into.
Keep your eyes peeled for the Kickstarter campaign.
