Vault Announces Darkest Dungeon Graphic Novels Based On Hit Video Game Series By Red Hook Studios
A new selection of upcoming graphic novels from Vault Comics, with Darkest Dungeon from the games by Red Hook Studios.
Vault Comics will publish graphic novels based on the Darkest Dungeon series of games developed and published by Red Hook Studios.
Debuting in 2016, Darkest Dungeon is a gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring, co-created by Chris Bourassa and Tyler Sigman. Players recruit, train, and lead a team of flawed heroes against unimaginable horrors, stress, disease, and the ever-encroaching dark. Widely acclaimed for its gameplay and storytelling, and notorious among gamers for its difficulty, Darkest Dungeon is among the most beloved independent games of the last decade. In 2023, Red Hook Studios, published the sequel, Darkest Dungeon II, which received widespread acclaim.
Together the Darkest Dungeon games have sold many millions of copies and are a cornerstone of the roguelike genre.
Vault’s Darkest Dungeon graphic novels will be written by John Lees, and drawn by Maan House, working in close consultation with Red Hook Studios co-founder and Darkest Dungeon creative director, Chris Bourassa. Lees is known for his writing on acclaimed horror titles like The Nasty (Vault Comics) and Hotell (AWA). Meanwhile, House is known for drawing Dark Souls (Titan Comics), based on the bestselling video game, along with other other horror titles like The Cemeterians (Vault Comics).
“I grew up reading comics. I learned to draw from studying the carefully crafted panels of the bronze age Batman books, and later, the exuberant splash pages of the Image Comics revolution. Darkest Dungeon was born of a deep love of this medium, and from day one, I’ve always dreamed of seeing it on the page. I couldn’t be more excited to work with the team at Vault to make this a reality - together, we’re going to do it right,” said Red Hook Studios co-founder Chris Bourassa. “This book will be a meaningful, canonical entry in the ongoing lore of Darkest Dungeon, offering long-time fans new and important insights while introducing new readers to the characters, tone, and world that made our games so successful.”
Vault’s all-new graphic novels will tell a canonical story set in the universe of Darkest Dungeon, revealing new details and introducing new mysteries at the heart of the Darkest Dungeon core mythology. Vault’s Darkest Dungeon graphic novels will debut with a launch campaign on BackerKit. Pre-launch sign-ups are now live. More details will be announced in the lead-up to launch.
Vault Chief Creative Officer and co-founder, Adrian Wassel, will lead the project for Vault, alongside Vault VP of Special Projects and Crowdfunding, Der-shing Helmer, with Bourassa overseeing creative for Red Hook Studios. Helmer also oversaw Vault’s record-breaking Dungeon Crawler Carl: Crocodile campaign.
“Our Darkest Dungeon graphic novel campaign will channel the spirit of the games—a realm filled with hidden rewards alongside myriad choices and dangers,” said Helmer. “We’ll have a little bit of something for everyone, from those who are newer to graphic novels to the most seasoned collectors of curiosities. We hope you’ll join the adventure and add this new story to your bookshelf before the torch goes out.”
“When I was a kid, I had a book that detailed the stats of every X-men character and their backstories. I would pour over it for hours, imagining battles with different team configurations. That’s Darkest Dungeon in a nutshell, and it’s why I am obsessed with the games,” said Wassel. “When I got to know Chris Bourassa (the game creator), I learned that X-men was one of his biggest inspirations, and suddenly it all clicked: inside the grueling and grim (but often wickedly funny) world of Darkest Dungeon, there was comic book DNA. Now we get to tell a new story—with the heroes everyone knows—in the comic book medium that’s been swirling around inside the games’ blood this whole time. It will be a horrific and excellent evolution—or, dare I say, mutation.”
This collaboration between Vault and Red Hook was facilitated by Maximum Orbit.
The X-Files Uncovered in Upcoming New Comics
From Dynamite Comics, new stories set after the X-Files TV show!
Trust no one! Except for the following blockbuster piece of news from Dynamite Entertainment and Disney Publishing Worldwide. The classic franchise The X-Files is returning to comics with all-new tales arriving this winter! The franchise's definitive modern writer in comics returns, with Joe Harris crafting even more thrilling cases for Mulder and Scully to investigate each and every month everywhere comics are sold. Harris has written more X-Files comic scripts than any other creator and is best known for his Season 10 and Season 11 storylines, published more than a decade ago. Longtime fans can look forward to more of Harris’s critically acclaimed take on the boundary-pushing, mind-bending science fiction that has long defined The X-Files. Beyond channeling the FBI's fabled agents, Harris is known for his copious contributions to Marvel, DC, and on Alice Cooper comics with Dynamite.
“The X-Files has always been sacred to me," said writer Joe Harris. "From my own early TV fandom on Friday and Sunday nights to getting to work on one of the greatest supernatural thriller/science fiction franchises in history, the further adventures of Agents Mulder and Scully have occupied a very special place in my head and career. I am beyond honored to write them and I am absolutely over the moon to work with Dynamite on this new series.”
Joining him for this new era of unclassified tales taking place after the show is artist Riley Brown. The up and coming penciler makes this big splash following work on titles like Dead Acre: Black Badge. His versatile stylings are set to bring the latest scintillating sci-fi to the comics page.
The X-Files had an incredibly influential run on television through the 1990s and beyond, with two films, multiple revival seasons, and spinoffs. The franchise also has history in comic books, with its procedural conspiracy and monster-of-the-week style storytelling being a perfect match for this other medium.
"The X-Files is the next jewel in the crown for us at Dynamite in working with Disney and entering 20th Century territories, hot on the heels of Kelly Thompson's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel epic," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "Multiple generations have loved following the cases of Mulder and Scully, and they translate absolutely perfectly to the format and serialized nature of comic books. We're working to make sure longtime fans and newcomers will love the new stories, and can't wait to share more!"
The comic series is set to debut this winter, and additional details on the stories being crafted by Harris and Brown will come shortly. Fans can follow Dynamite across all platforms and their favorite voices around the fandom to stay tuned.
