#FCBD - Speed Racer #0
From Mad Cave Studios
It’s Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, and I had the chance to look at Speed Racer #0 from Mad Cave Studios, which will be available at comic shops.
An all-new continuation of Tatsuo Yoshida's classic manga/anime, MachGoGoGo, known to Western audiences as Speed Racer!
David Pepose has the storytelling keys to the featured story in issue #0, which ignites Mad Cave's ongoing Speed Racer series. Meanwhile, Mark Russell drives a backup tale that leads directly into a Racer X spin-off series.
One part Drive, another part Baby Driver, and another part Fast and Furious-with classic anime/manga inspiration throughout-fans new and old are given a front-row seat to exciting tales of action, adventure, overcoming challenges, and family.
Although I was aware of the Speed Racer series, I didn’t watch it at home. Even so, I found this a fantastic introduction and issue #0 for the upcoming series.
It not only gives us hints as to what is to come, but also some little titbits of backstory that readers can expand upon as the series hits its stride. I could jump straight into it for readers like me, who do not know what has come before. I enjoyed the fast pace and the action within the story, and got immersed immediately.
Both stories in this issue have some excellent car-centric action, with the first up a street race that turns into something more when a police chase gets involved. This gives us the fast-paced action you would expect and a high-tech aspect to the cars and the racers.
The second story adds a new dimension, with clever infographics. This made it a little more important in the realms of the story and a mystery about all the money being made and used - hopefully something that can be added in the future.
As an introduction for new readers - like me - I really enjoyed this and I hope that more aware readers and fans of the series will to - let me know!
