Augmented takes readers to the not-so distant future of the early twenty-third century. A period where human beings splice their own DNA with the genes of animals and plants, pushing the limits of evolution and human physiology. This is no utopia however. Augmentations are controlled by corps who have developed the technology to grow augmented humans from just a few cells. And if the body rejects the augmentations, it could lead to dire consequences.
Drucker describes Augmented as, ‘A Biopunk action comic for fans of anime and manga, action flicks and cyberpunk visions of the future.’
About the Story
In the year 2204 humanity has unlocked the power of Augmentations: implanting the genes of one organism into another. As a result a new subspecies of human has emerged: Homo sapiens augmentum.
This comes at a cost, however. Sometimes the augmentations do not take and corrupt the genetic code, triggering rapid mutations creating what is known as a Chimera. All sense of self is lost as the amalgamation of animal parts, leaving the victim a bestial husk of a being.
There’s another price too. All augmentations come with a price tag produced by the future’s many megacorporations. In the race to develop cutting edge augmentations, Corps have turned to growing humans in a lab, with desirable traits already endowed.
One example of this are the Rangers, enforcers of the law, augmented to give them an edge in combat against Chimeras.
In the floating city of New Lemuria one such ranger, Furina, boasts venom potent enough to take down an elephant. Her purpose is simple: hunt Chimeras and uphold the law in the city. However after her superiors cast her aside she’s recruited into a scheme by Sal, an old friend with large ambitions. She has her sights set on a revolutionary new augment held deep within the vaults of the city’s most powerful corporation. This job will teach Furina what it means to be Augmented.
