Here are the latest crowdfunding projects that may be of interest to you.
What happens when a money-loving lawyer convinces lab-accident supervillains to file personal injury suits instead? Find out in the new quirky comedy series Carlo Scolari: Attorney at Law #1, now live on Kickstarter!
Written by Kevin Doyle (The Ninja Scouts, Doctor Destructica), with art by Eisner Award nominee Mauricio Caballero (Helm) and Lina Sanchez, colors by Fernando Caballero and letters by Ringo Award nominee Justin Birch (Nottingham, House of Slaughter).
Terrible accidents keep happening at the Speculative Technologies Laboratory (Spec Tech). The victims of these accidents gain destructive powers and/or become horribly disfigured. As a result, they lash out in shock and rage until stopped by local hero, Excelsius, with local reporter Carmen Ortiz covering the story. Then an enterprising lawyer named Carlo Scolari convinces the latest accident victim, Ted Wainright, to file a personal injury suit against Spec Tech rather than go on the usual rampage of revenge.
“I've always been amused by how science labs are depicted in comic books,” said Kevin Doyle. “I've worked in labs for my entire professional career, so when I see a lab accident in a comic book I can't help noticing all these poor safety practices and OSHA violations that led up to it. That led to the image of a Saul Goodman-esque personal injury lawyer making a tv commercial about these lab accidents, and the rest of the story developed from there. I really appreciate platforms like Kickstarter, because they give you the freedom to develop projects with niche, off beat premises like mine that may not fit more conventional publishers.”
“A lawyer that defends the supervillians, you just got to give it a moment to realize the gigantic potential of funny moments and intricate plots that can come out of this,” said Mauricio Caballero. “I absolutely want to see this materialize!”
"I would love for this project to come to life,” said Lina Sanchez. “The characters are charismatic and I would like everyone to support their future adventures!"
"I never thought a lawyer comic would be so much fun!" said Fernando Caballero. "A well conducted story, great art, and fun is assured!"
Carlo Scolari: Attorney at Law #1 is perfect for fans of The Tick, She-Hulk, and Squirrel Girl. This campaign adjourns Nov. 9th.
Now live on Kickstarter, The Game issues #1-3 from the creators of White Ash, writer Charlie Stickney with art and letters by Conor Hughes; colors by Tríona Farrell. This sexy noir, sci-fi thriller evokes elements of the original Quantum Leap combined with The Highlander, but in this all-new series it's go big or go home if you even stand a chance to win.
Eli, who is down on his luck, is told on his 30th birthday that he's Player Number 3 in a game that's been going for over a thousand years. And that he needs to figure out the rules pretty quick if he wants to survive.
“I’ll admit, I got greedy,” said Charlie Stickney. “After having the privilege of building the world of White Ash with Conor Hughes, when approaching The Game , an equally expansive universe, I thought why not run this team back – see what else we can do. Thankfully Conor said yes, and along with Tríona Farrell, we’re building something special. If you like our spin on the fantasy tropes, you’re going to love what we do with sci-fi.”
“I’m ecstatic to be back working on The Game!” said Conor Hughes. “From first blush The Game felt tailor made for the kind of story I’d have a blast telling and the kind of characters I’d have fun inhabiting. Any young adult especially can relate to the escalating pressures Eli faces as he’s thrown into a gauntlet wherein he doesn’t even know what he doesn’t know. His position on the game board seems both precarious and unclear and that’s what makes this story so exciting to tell. Happily he does seem to have allies, though their position on the board is also a matter of some question…”
Half the fun of The Game is finding out the next big reveal! The 48-page oversized second issue contains chapters two and three. Variant covers by Eric Nguyễn, Steph C. and Ivan Tao.
To honor the new White Ash Comics Imprint, Charlie Stickney and Conor Hughes will be branding all titles on Kickstarter going forward.
