The Harlem Renaissance Lives On—The Winterfields Return in Noir Is The New Black Season 2
The Winterfields is coming to Kickstarter as a part of Noir Is The New Black from FairSquare Graphics.
FairSquare Graphics is proud to bring Noir Is The New Black back to Kickstarter with a bold new format! After breaking records in 2020 with nearly $48,000 raised and 1,200 backers, this acclaimed anthology series returns with new stories, new covers, and a new legacy in the making!
Among this exciting new collection is THE WINTERFIELDS. The gripping historical noir, honoring 100 years of the Harlem Renaissance, is written by Joseph P. Illidge (Bloodletter, The Shadow Cabinet) and legendary artist Chriscross (Weapon X-Men, Blood Syndicate: Season One), with colorist Andrew Dalhouse (Storm: Lifedream) and lettering by AndWorld Design (Bloodletter).

1925. Harlem, New York. The father and son duo of Cain and Carver Winterfield are bodyguards, hired by scholar and activist W.E.B. DuBois to protect a teenage girl from the assassin that killed her parents and now wants her dead. The Harlem Renaissance is the backdrop for a story of action, drama, and justice!
"Ever since last year's successful debut of The Winterfields in the top-selling Noir Is The New Black: Expanded Edition book from our fearless publisher FairSquare Graphics, Chris and I have been planning for the father and son duo's return!” said Joe Illidge. “Ex-WW1 soldier Cain Winterfield and his son Carver return as the best bodyguards of Harlem, and if you thought the 2024 story was fierce, get your popcorn and sit down for some rough and tumble brawls with a little bit of heart!"
If you're drawn to period noir like Watson & Holmes, pulpy historical fiction with teeth, or emotionally rich action stories like Blood Syndicate, The Winterfields is your next essential read.
Noir Is The New Black redefined the genre in 2020 with its unapologetically Black take on classic noir. Now, it’s back—this time in serialized comic format, complete with five stunning variant covers including The Puzzled Man by Fiddler Sneaky, The Winterfields by Chriscross, Noh Face by Uko Smith, Little Rock Files by Quinn MCGowan, and a Cover E Holofoil by Ken Lashley. Pick your cover. Kickstart this campaign. Join the legacy.
FairSquare Graphics continues to push the genre forward, paying homage to the Black Noir literary tradition born in the 1960s and reimagining it for the next generation of readers. Support powerful Black storytelling—The Winterfields is available exclusively through the Noir Is The New Black Kickstarter campaign, ending July 19, 2025.
A Surreal Library of Dreams—The Works of Tony Sandoval Return in a Collector’s Offering from Magnetic Press
An excellent-looking collection from Magnetic Press, this looks to be an excellent read in A Surreal Library of Dreams on Backerkit.
This summer, Magnetic Press invites readers to step into the dreamlike multiverse of Tony Sandoval with THE FANTASY DREAM WORLDS OF TONY SANDOVAL, a showcase of his most definitive works, now live on BackerKit.
Magnetic Press presents a curated collection of Tony Sandoval’s most celebrated works—headlined by his brand-new release, The Dragons of Paris—gathering seven graphic novels in premium hardcover editions, including three newly remastered volumes of long-out-of-print material, together for the first time.
This campaign breathes new life into several long-unavailable works, each presented in Magnetic’s signature format: curved corners, spotUV detailing, and lush archival-quality printing. The collection spans Sandoval’s most acclaimed titles, including The Dragons of Paris (2024), DoomBoy (2011), Watersnakes (2018), 1000 Storms (2020), A Glance Backward (2015), Rendez-vous in Phoenix (2016), and The Windy Day (2019).
From metal-fueled grief in DoomBoy to aquatic ghost girls in Watersnakes and goblin pirates in The Windy Day, each volume in the Tony Sandoval library delivers a haunting, painterly experience rooted in emotion, mystery, and otherworldly charm.

The Dragons of Paris
A secret pact is broken, and ancient dragons rise from beneath the streets of Belle Époque Paris. With a mermaid in tow and gargoyles coming to life, a two-fisted Hawaiian princess must race through the catacombs to stop the awakening of a magical war.
DoomBoy
After the death of his girlfriend, a lonely teen channels his grief into thunderous guitar riffs—broadcasting his pain across town and becoming an underground legend. A raw and honest look at love, loss, and the soul of heavy metal.
Watersnakes
When a quiet girl befriends a mysterious new classmate, she discovers a ghostly warrior spirit living inside her—teeth and all. Together, they unlock a haunting underwater realm where friendship, fantasy, and ancient curses collide.
1000 Storms
In this spiritual follow-up to Watersnakes, a misunderstood girl discovers a portal to another world—one filled with demons threatening to invade her own. A moody, magical tale about fear, strength, and the power of being different.
A Glance Backward
After a family tragedy, young Joey slips into the walls of his home and enters a surreal realm of memories and meaning. A poetic journey through grief, illustrated with dreamlike intensity and emotional resonance.
Rendez-vous in Phoenix
Based on Sandoval’s own story, this autobiographical graphic novel follows his harrowing, illegal journey across the U.S.-Mexico border—all for love. A deeply personal and timely look at immigration, sacrifice, and the pursuit of connection.
The Windy Day
When a young girl’s peaceful afternoon turns stormy, she’s rescued by a gentle black wolf named Courage. Together, they take to the skies—learning how to let go of fear and fly higher than ever before.
Tony Sandoval is a Mexican comic book artist and writer celebrated for his surreal narratives and unmistakable watercolor aesthetic. Born in northwestern Mexico in 1973, he began his career in graphic design before turning fully to comics, where his emotionally resonant stories and luminous, flowing brushwork quickly earned him international acclaim.
Sandoval’s ethereal watercolors shimmer between worlds—anchored by raw emotion and lifted by a mythic sense of wonder. His work has been translated into numerous languages and published globally, earning multiple Eisner Award nominations—including Best Writer/Artist, Best Painter/Multimedia Artist, and Best Publication for Teens. His autobiographical graphic novel Rendez-vous in Phoenix offers a deeply personal perspective on immigration and love, while fantasy-driven works like Watersnakes and 1000 Storms plunge readers into dreamlike universes that feel at once ancient and intimate.
