Kickstarter Review: Anti-Christine and the Four Unicorns of the Apocalypse #1
What if the Anti-christ started a rock band and turned the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse into unicorns instead of ending the world?
Live now on Kickstarter, and not long left is Anti-Christine and the Four Unicorns of the Apocalypse #1 from Weirdbrain Comics, and I had a chance for review!
So, Christine is the Devil's daughter, which makes her the Anti-Christ. And at the age of thirteen, she was supposed to fulfill her destiny and end the world. Obviously, Christine didn't do that... Instead, she did what any rebellious teen daughter of the Devil would do--she took her father's gift of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and turned them into unicorns. Then she decided she didn't want to end the world, so she took her new friends, ran away from home, and started a rock band.
But now she's twenty-seven, and the Devil, during that time, had another daughter—who is about to turn thirteen. And the only way she can fulfill her father's wishes is to find and kill her half-sister: Anti-Christine and the Four Unicorns of the Apocalypse!
Following up from the absurdness of SVEN THE GROUNDHOG: SAVIOR FROM THE STARS and HELL OF A JOB comes the next crazy idea from the weird mind of Dave Franchini (Zenescope Entertainment's Belle: Beast Hunter, Cinderella: Serial Killer Princess, & Grimm Fairy Tales), ANTI-CHRISTINE AND THE FOUR UNICORNS OF THE APOCALYPSE #1, the 3rd series launching from publisher, WEIRD BRAIN ENTERTAINMENT!
This is a banging story; it mixes history with the different aspects of the ‘now’ really well. Obviously, things happened before we met Christine, and there is something there, but there is maybe more to it than that, and that is part of what we want to discover. Then there is her half sister, and that is a sinister part of the story. It works well, though, and as a new story, there is a lot to take away with you, but it sticks and makes you want to read more and see where this goes.
The characters are entertaining, and there are many different factions here, all with their own ideas. I like the addition of the priest and his role is left slightly open…
Drawn by the incredible Unai de Zarate(Robocop: Road Trip, Underworld, Salem: Queen of Thorns and The Bunnyman's Furry Nightmare) and colored by the magnificently-talented DC Alonso(Lollipop Kids, Rayna: The Bastard Queen and Midnight Rose), with letters and logo design by the amazing Taylor Esposito of Ghost Glyph Studios(Flash Gordon, Space Ghost, Red Hood and Harley Quinn TAS)--This apocalyptic story of sibling rivalry, heavy metal and carnage is going to rock all existence in the comic universe!
I really like the artwork here. There is the dark, more bloody side from the softer (homely) side, and the addition of one of the unicorns. That combines with plenty of action makes this easy to read and uses angles, outfits and fights!
