Kickstarter Review: Fortune by Luke McKoy & Josh Hurlburt
Now on Kickstarter
Funding now on Kickstarter is the first part of a fantasy comic by Luke McKoy and Josh Hurlburt - Fortune.
Fortune teases the threads of fate, family, and questionable life choices, weaving them into an adventure where prophecy might be real, free will might be overrated, and the world’s balance may depend on people who can barely balance themselves.
Fortune is an on-going fantasy comic full of heart and humour, about fate, family, and the fine line between prophecy and free will. Set in a medieval fantasy world, Fortune follows Bayl, Steffen, Maddy, and Marcus, as each of them are forced into events that will change their lives, test bonds, and tip the balance of the world itself.

One of the great things that GlobalComix continues to do is make it easy for readers to discover and support new projects, especially by allowing previews and direct links to current Kickstarter campaigns. In this case, the first issue of Fortune is available to read in its uncoloured form, which is a really nice way to get a feel for the story and the artwork before jumping in. You can check out the links below to read that uncoloured version, while the Kickstarter page itself also showcases several fully coloured pages, giving a clear idea of the final look and feel.
Right from the start, this opening issue introduces a solid cast of characters and does a good job of weaving them naturally into the narrative. There’s a strong mix of action and quieter, more personal moments, with elements like bandits, family dynamics, and conflict all playing a role. These scenes aren’t just there for spectacle; they help establish who these characters are and make it easy to connect with them early on, which is especially important in a first issue.
The story leans confidently into some classic fantasy tropes, and that works very much in its favour. We get royal families, magic, dangerous creatures lurking in the woods, and the sense that there’s something much bigger happening beneath the surface. There’s also a clear theme of destiny hanging over the story, particularly the idea of a fate that someone may be trying to outrun or reject, which adds an extra layer of intrigue.
That’s a lot to pack into a debut issue, but the creative team handles it well. Nothing feels rushed or overcrowded, and instead, there’s a strong sense of build-up alongside enough mystery to keep you invested and curious about where things are headed next. It feels like a confident opening chapter that knows exactly what it wants to set up.
Visually, the art is excellent, and the colouring shown on the Kickstarter pages looks spot-on. Character designs are distinctive and memorable, and the environments help sell the fantasy setting without overwhelming the page. Even in its uncoloured form, the artwork reads clearly and carries a lot of atmosphere.
Overall, Fortune #1 makes a strong first impression. It’s absolutely worth checking out, and just as worth backing if you like fantasy stories with solid world-building, engaging characters, and a hint of something bigger and darker waiting in the wings.
