I had a chance to look at The Whitechapel Cordon, which is now live on Kickstarter by David Hitchcock, Chris Denton, and Rob Jones.
An Old Soldiers’ Home is sealed behind an impenetrable cordon following a gruesome discovery. Consulting detectives Bernard and Felicity Hiltson are sent inside to investigate. The brother and sister duo swiftly realise that everyone there is trapped in a building where death lies around every corner… and far worse stirs in the attic.
When you hear the word ‘Whitechapel,’ there is usually the whole Jack The Ripper aspect to contend with, but this is entirely different.
Set in Whitechapel and close enough in time to the Ripper murders, we get a different sort of death. It’s an old soldier's home, and one of them has died in an unexplained manner. The church, bringing in a brother and sister duo to investigate suspects, is much more supernatural.
That same church is responsible for the titular cordon; we understand what they mean by saying that none shall pass. It’s an excellent plot device that combines action and mystery in one (large) building.
The building is a crucial aspect of the story as the surviving cast looks around, looking for the cause of death and how to combat it. We get some excellent scenes around the dwelling from top to bottom, which are all shown perfectly.
As the story progresses, we discover the nature of the infestation and what drives it, in a brilliant twist there are some excellent horror and scares to go with it as we get closer to the answers.
The finale of the story is excellent, makes a lot of sense for all characters involved, and makes some brilliant use of the story's mystical elements.
The black-and-white art is excellent, portraying not only the tone of the story but also the various action and character elements. There are some scenes that I found my eye lingering on for longer than usual - this, combined with perfect lettering, rounds off an amazing story.
Well worth backing!
