Kickstarter Spotlight: Tights #1
Already funded on Kickstarter and with a few days left, this is Tights #1
The world is recovering from COVID-21. Global economies are in the toilet, crime rates approach record highs, and now everyday superheroes, aka “Tights,” have emerged in an attempt to right society’s wrongs.
Unfortunately, most of these Tights don’t have any professional crime-fighting skills to speak of, let alone superpowers. No, they’re out-of-work regular Joe and Jane vigilantes who often find themselves clogging up the criminal justice system and fighting a losing battle against law and order. That's why they're a particular pain in the ass for our protagonist—the young, brash, anti-Tights federal judge, OLIVER ANDREWS.
But when Oliver is blackmailed by a group of Tights into helping them take down San Francisco’s major crime syndicates, he will ultimately find himself becoming the very thing he hates most—a superhero.
I really enjoyed the build to this issue. Starting off in the world as we know it now and those who are reacting to these problems. There are the criminals - who see a bank robbery as an easy way to get money. And their comments and reasons for it all make sense. Then there are the heroes - or 'tights' who think they can save the day.
In this case, there is a fun trope here, with a good idea, poorly executed because of TV and movies - an excellent way of putting all of this.
Then we meet our hero (heh) the Judge, and he has a lot of issues of his own. He's married and he is the judge who judges these tights when it all goes wrong. Which it always does.
The build on this issue, where we discover more about the judge, his opinions and friends is excellent, with a shock to his system, he gets another shock too - and that is the catalyst that starts off this good looking series.
There is some excellent art here, clean and crisp, with some great action scenes and some brilliant ideas. This is combined with some excellent colouring, panel layouts and lettering - a good story all around.
