This week’s pick is a new series of the Black, White & Blood theme with Logan: Black, White & Blood #1 from Marvel Comics.
THE BRUTAL AND VIOLENT LIFE OF LOGAN! WOLVERINE. A.K.A. LOGAN’s long and violent history is showcased in brand-new tales by top tier talent in brutal black, white and red! Tom Waltz and Alex Lins reveal Logan’s never-before-revealed military service during the 1950s - with a secret connection to a fan-favorite Marvel character! A mission in seedy 1970s Times Square puts Logan on the trail of a deranged serial killer, as told by Saladin Ahmed and Adam Kubert. Survival is the name of the game after Logan escapes from Weapon X - by Larry Hama and Dave Wachter.
Writer: Saladin Ahmed, Larry Hama & Tom Waltz
Penciller: Adam Kubert, Alex Lins & Dave Wachter
Cover Artist: Alex Maleev
If any character is suitable for the ‘black, white and blood’ theme, it is Logan. In this case, he is more Logan than Wolverine, and these stories feel like when he was running around Madripoor as Patch. Away from the capes and the X-Men-related issues, and having his own problems.
Three stories over three distinct locations with suitable amounts of blood and violence (it is a red band story). During wartime, the city and the mountains give us a number of different scenarios as Logan is a soldier, detective (!) and a wildman.
These were all perfectly put together, with excellent artwork across all the different scenarios.
Logan may not be for everyone, but I found these refreshing stories.
