Previews: Brik Jones & The Airless Year Out Next Week
Two new titles from Fighting Lion Comics & Dark Horse Comics
Coming next week are two new titles. We’ve got Brik Jones: Attorney for Earth, Vol. 1 from Fighting Lion Comics and The Airless Year from Dark Horse Comics. Check out the details of both below:
Announcing Brik Jones: Attorney for Earth, Vol. 1, the complete first chapter of the epic science fiction webcomic from Fighting Lion Comics! Written and lettered by Phil Smith (Witchblade: Due Process, Artifacts, Trinity: Blood on the Sands) with art by Giuseppe Cafaro (Fathom: Kiani, Catwoman, Suicide Squad) and issue #0 by Sid Kotian (Gambit), colors by Bill Farmer (Think Tank, Dream Police, The Adventures of Apocalypse Al).
When an interstellar wrecking crew claims the Earth as its property, they are temporarily halted by an interstellar court order until Earth's representative can be found. Brik is unceremoniously shot into space to a waiting starship, where he discovers his missing father has been Earth's attorney for the last 20 years but has gone missing. In his father's absence, Brik must assume the title. As Brik navigates the byzantine galactic legal structure, the clock is ticking as an immense Destroyer waits above the Earth, eager to tear it to pieces. Brik must solve the mystery of what happened to his father and how he will manage the pressure the nations of Earth place on him with their competing interests and his own views. All while on the run from the mysterious alien race whose plan to destroy the Earth rests on it having no legal defender.
“This project has been building to this release for over 9 years and has come in fits and starts; from being introduced to the incredible talent of Sid Kotian, thanks to an introduction by Ron Marz, to meeting the ever energetic Giuseppe Cafaro and now getting the benefit of the boundless talent of Bill Farmer,” said writer and creator, Phil Smith. “I am incredibly pleased to have finally taken the plunge to bring it all together and offer the first, of I hope many more adventures, of the titular character Brik Jones as he makes his way across the galaxy trying to find a place and a purpose for one planet among the many.”
Blending adventure elements best seen in series like Firefly and Law and Order, as well as exotic science fiction expressed in X-Files and Star Trek, Brik Jones: Attorney for Earth, Vol. 1, will post online chapters weekly today, through the summer, and will return for a print edition via Kickstarter this August.
From Eisner and Harvey Award-winning editor and writer Adam P. Knave (Amelia Cole, The Once and Future Queen), celebrated Portland-based artist Valentine Barker (Wartechs, Shelby Stone and the Temple of Ta'aora), and letters by Frank Cvetkovic (Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter, Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team), comes an all-new LGBTQ+ story for young adults, The Airless Year! It’s a story of self-discovery and empowerment about taking control where you can, and learning to let the rest go.
For Kacee, a queer Black girl in middle school, everything feels like a struggle. When she fails a class as a result of her stress and ends up in summer school, she starts to wonder why she even bothers trying--and ultimately begins to discover her own power to improve the things in her life she can control, and try to let go of what she can’t.
The Airless Year is out from Dark Horse Comics next Wednesday.
