Celebrity Baker Kim-Joy Brings an Inspiring Story of Anxiety, Mental Health, and Finding Your Voice to Comics
Quiet releases digitally via Comixology Originals in autumn 2026 and in print in summer 2027 with Mad Cave Studios.
Mad Cave Studios, in partnership with Comixology Originals, proudly presents QUIET, an all-new YA graphic novel from celebrity baker, bestselling cookbook author, Great British Bake Off finalist, and winner of Bake Off's New Year 2022 special Kim-Joy and artist Alti. Inspired by Kim-Joy's life, Quiet explores social anxiety, selective mutism, and bullying through an emotional coming-of-age story featuring art and spot color by Alti, letters by Sara Linsley, and editing by Allison O’Toole.
"So much of my work has mental health themes," said Kim-Joy. "It’s something I care about deeply and return to again and again, because I think stories are one of the best ways we have of making people feel less alone - and I hope that anyone who reads it feels that. And maybe wants their very own robot!"
The thoughtful and transportive story is the second comics collaboration from Kim-Joy and Alti, following the publication of their acclaimed graphic novel Turtle Bread: A Graphic Novel About Baking, Fitting In, and the Power of Friendship.

In Quiet, Mary hasn’t spoken a word at school in years due to selective mutism. She’s isolated, misunderstood, and targeted by relentless bullies. When she’s assigned a SereniBot - a mental health support robot - she’s mortified. The last thing she wants is more attention. But Mary soon discovers the robot can do more than just help her cope; it can help her fight back. What starts as clever pranks on her bullies turns into a series of misadventures that spiral out of control. As the line between standing up for herself and becoming a bully starts to blur, Mary begins to ask a difficult question: in trying to take back control, has she become the very thing she feared?
Kim-Joy's positive, empathetic, and vibrant personality shines on every page of Quiet. As Mary questions her choices, the graphic novel becomes a deeper story about power, empathy, and what it really means to be heard. Combining emotional insight with a hint of sci-fi, Quiet speaks to anyone who’s ever felt voiceless, misunderstood, or underestimated. It’s a reminder that courage doesn’t always roar - and sometimes, the quietest voices carry the most important truths.
“From the moment I learned about the project, I knew I wanted to work with Kim-Joy again," said Alti. "Bringing her cookies and cakes and other creations to the page is a treat. I really feel a connection to Mary and have always wanted a sidekick, so designing and bringing the robot 'to life' was not only fun, but a great way for me to get to experience what that might be like. Throughout the story, I would allow my imagination to flourish and was able to express my emotions in Mary’s facial expressions and body language, as well as in the other characters.
Kim-Joy continued, "Working with the whole team again has been a joy. Alti is so smart and talented, and she and my editor Allison often notice little tweaks that elevate everything. Seeing Alti bring Mary and the SereniBot to life has been one of my favourite parts of this whole process."
Quiet is a moving coming-of-age graphic novel that will resonate with readers who connected with Turtle Bread and anyone looking for an authentic story about anxiety, resilience, and finding the courage to be heard.
Quiet will be available digitally through Comixology Originals in Fall 2026 before arriving in print from Mad Cave Studios in Summer 2027.
Kim-Joy will be signing at Mad Cave Studios' booth #2806 at San Diego Comic-Con International, Saturday, July 25, at 12 PM.
Kinjin Storylab Expands Creator-Owned Comics Worldwide With New MANGITA Format
A new format and new stories from Red Light Properties, with the first coming later this year!
Kinjin Storylab is expanding the reach of creator-owned comics with the launch of its new Mangita line! Coined by the cross-cultural comics lab as a Japanese-Spanish term meaning “beloved little comics,” Mangitas are compact full-color editions designed to deliver complete, satisfying chapters of story at an affordable price. Built for curious readers, Mangitas offers an all-new way to step into creator-owned worlds—where the strange feels human and every moment (in both this life and the afterlife) leaves a mark.
Each Mangita is thoughtfully redesigned with brand-new wraparound covers while preserving the immersive world that earned Dan Goldman's Unfinished Business hardcover a 2026 Eisner Award nomination for Best Publication Design.
“We are immensely proud of our Eisner-nominated Red Light Properties: Unfinished Business hardcover,” said Dan Goldman. “But I understand it’s a tall order for readers to drop $50 to check out a series new to them. Mangitas provides the perfect casual entry into the world of Red Light Properties, which should not be slept on (if I can toot my own horn for a minute).”

A psychic who sees ghosts is married to a realtor who sees opportunity. In a dying empire where most citizens can’t afford a home, they exorcise haunted houses and sell them with a “previously haunted” discount. But the ghosts? 100% real, bro.
Additionally, Red Light Properties Mangitas will be Kinjin Storylab’s first titles distributed through Ingram, making them available to comic shops, zine shops, bookstores, libraries, and retailers worldwide.
The first three Mangitas will cover the complete first season of Red Light Properties, while the fourth brings stories currently serialized through Kinjin Storylab’s free newsletter into print for the very first time. Future Mangitas will follow every few months as the thrilling series continues.
Red Light Properties combines the supernatural suspense of The Conjuring with the morally complex, bottom-feeder hustle of Better Call Saul, creating one of the most distinctive creator-owned series in independent comics today. In addition to inviting in new readers, the Mangita format allows for more frequent releases from the Eisner-nominated series in between the gorgeous hardcover releases.
Founded by Goldman in 2026, Kinjin Storylab is a creator-owned publishing studio developing original storyworlds through an innovative analog-digital loop of email serialization and premium print editions.
The first 200-page Red Light Properties Vol. 1 Mangita is slated to arrive this fall, with subsequent volumes releasing bi-monthly. Comic shops, bookstores, libraries, and retailers can order copies through Ingram distribution, while readers can follow the series in real time by joining Kinjin Storylab’s free newsletter at Kinjin.co for episode drops from all upcoming comic projects.

Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, Mike del Mundo, And Mike Huddleston Introduce Readers To Three Worlds / Three Moons And Their First Release, Foundations
From Dark Horse Comics and out now is Foundations, and Dark Horse has released some background to the series.
Every month, Dark Horse Comics gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a comic or book in the Horsepower column which appears in each of our printed comics issues for the month. These articles can include the inspiration behind a specific title, what it’s like to work in the comics industry, or some other special feature on the highlighted title of the month. In this month’s Horsepower, Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, Mike del Mundo, and Mike Huddleston introduce readers to Three Worlds / Three Moons and their first release, Foundations:
There’s nothing like witnessing an act of inspiration, a moment of creation, to remind us we’re alive.
For the last several years, at 3w3m.com, we’ve been engaging in an experiment.
Traditionally, world-building was something creators did one of two ways: the first being in seclusion, whittling away at their desks, filling notebooks full of details before settling on a story, and using that story as the means to deliver that already-constructed world to the audience.
The other way is to use the story itself as a sort of fungible document, building the world through its pages concurrently, adding detail as it demands.
There are pluses and minuses to both approaches, but we wanted to invert them entirely.
What if we took the world-as-precursor-to-story approach and married it to the make-it-up-as-you-go delivery method?
What if we let the audience in as we built a new universe from the ground up—starting from a kernel of an idea and expanding outward from there, letting them see the trial and error, eliciting their feedback, and growing a community around the act of creation itself?
So, that’s what we did. The results have been pretty exhilarating. The books coming your way over the next year are the direct outcome of that experiment. Our intention for this initial wave of titles is to catch you up to all that we’ve developed there so far, because we want as many people to be a part of this as possible. We’re thrilled to partner with Dark Horse to make these works available via your favorite comic book retailer or bookstore.
What began with a few disparate ideas grew, in front of thousands of witnesses and participants, into a sprawling, richly realized new universe. We have hundreds of pages’ worth of lore, backstories, maps, and concept art, packaged beautifully into deluxe graphic novel sourcebooks, taking those formative notions and developing them into short stories featuring some of the brightest artistic talents in comics.
We have trial efforts in form and format itself, taking a digital micro-story and repurposing it as a tribute to the sci-fi serials of yesteryear’s golden age. We invited some of our favorite creative teams to take our ideas and run with them. We have invitations for you to step broadly into the new universe yourself while being given a guided tour of all its rich settings.
And from all of it, the beginnings of the story to come. In Foundations, the adventure of Tajo Vallar begins. In a solar system trapped in warring cycles of order and chaos, magic and science, his doomed mission to a dead moon—and what happens to the family he left behind—sets the stage for the grand conflict to come.
This is where everything starts. Let’s see where it goes now.
Together.
—Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, Mike del Mundo, and Mike Huddleston
