Review: Before We Sail
Now On Aces Weekly
Featured below and live on the excellent Aces Weekly, I looked at the new series Before We Sail.
BEFORE WE SAIL explores the consequences of life continuing in a society that has no confidence in having a future.
By Carlos Yacolca, Michelle Lino, Diego Revelo, Alberto Rayo, and David Escobedo.
It’s the end of the world.
And in the case of Before We Sail, this post-apocalyptic vision does a fantastic job of taking two characters in this landscape and bringing us a gripping tale that looks at the human element of those trying to survive.
There is a zombie outbreak, and as a force of nature, they are in the perfect position to embellish the story and add that outside threat, as those who are left try to make the best of it all.
We also look at this particular part of the world and what is left, with some commentary of the way the world works and the future problems that this can cause in an event like this. It’s subtle but adds to the story here.
The basis of this is the two trying to get out to see, and as the title suggests, this happens before they sell. Of course, there are pitfalls and side quests to go on - for reasons both deem important - and over the seven chapters (and weeks) of this story in Aces Weekly, there is an excellent blend of character moments, storytelling and some brilliant pacing.
The artwork throughout is excellent, with some clever use of the panels, angles of the panels and the way the layout works in the widescreen view for the reader. There are some excellent lettering styles, and the tones and colours of the story make this fit together incredibly.
Before We Sail is a gripping, thoughtful ride through a world that’s ended — but still has stories worth telling. Its strong characters, clever storytelling, and striking artwork are great examples of why Aces Weekly is such a treasure trove for comic fans. If you’re looking for something fresh, human, and haunting, make sure you read it there — you won’t regret setting sail on this journey.

Sir Michael, thank so much for the review.
