Available from Band Of Bards Comics, this large-sized futuristic story is available to order now. This is Bro-D Can't Be Broken.
In the year 2095, humanity is on the right track to recover from catastrophic climate change and to begin a new era of advancement. People from every background intermingle in clean megacities across the globe, and a commitment to tolerance marks their developing international society.
But a group of beings called Deywṓs, who claim to be Earth’s ancient gods, are harassing the human cities, hoping to terrorize humanity back into submission.
The only person who can stand in their way is Bro-D, a genetically-modified teen who was altered and trained to save lives in the face of a mass crisis. Practically invulnerable, Bro-D will engage the Deywṓs’ champion, Bregghammer, in a running battle of fists, weapons, and will, an immovable teen vs an unstoppable godling, in a gambit to allow the megacity’s citizens to evacuate.
But on the day where his abilities matter most, Bro-D will finally discover the truth behind his powers, and the one thing that can bring him down for good.By Ben Humeniuk
Dropping us straight into it all, we don’t get to see Bro-D in action for a little while.
What we do get is some excellent build-up and world-building. Setting us up - not only we, the reader, as we discover the world that the character now lives in, but also the situation Bro-D will get into.
After reading many, many science fictions where the future is a horrible, dystopian place with wars and nasty aliens and beings, it’s refreshing to be placed in a world where things are going right. Technology, borders and more are in a much better place than we are now. It is like the worlds in 1950’s pulp sci-fi.
Well, mostly better…
Yes, there are the Deywṓs - these demi-gods are causing trouble and are intent on violence. This one causing the issues here seems to be based on Hercules, who is extremely violent. As he goes to a powerful reactor, he is intent on causing destruction. If he makes it, then the casualty list will be huge.
This is where Bro-D comes in. A super-powered teen with some excellent support - he is the last line of defence, and in this story, we get to see what he can do.
It’s well crafted, combining the action of the battle with the more emotional punches around it. Bro-D has his own issues he is dealing with, and as the battle progresses, we get more understanding of these - with a well-done flashback too. I also like the pleas of emotion and peaceful options with the Deywṓs too, these make some sense, and there are some excellent moments within the battle. The battle is spread over a wide distance, with both combatants making the most of it. I like the fast-moving parts as well.
The art is well played out - yes, the battle makes up a lot of the story, and there are some excellent action panels that show the power of the hits and speed and impact. The flashback scenes use a unique colour scheme from the rest of the story, and this works well and takes us back in time while showing the scenes' emotions well.
This is an excellent read, and the larger-sized page count works in its favour, and I would love to read more from this world.
