Review: Fictionauts #1
Red 5 Comics has a new series out this week - it's Fictionauts #1
They've battled Moby Dick, matched wits with Dickens, and befriended a kingdom of evolved sea monkeys! They're the genre hopping heroes of Hypercity: the Fictionauts! Fantasy is a serious business for this team, as they scour fictional worlds to right dangerous anomalies and preserve the balance between reality and imagination!
Script - Mauro Mantella
Art - Leandro Rizzo
Colours - Marcelo Blanco
A new series from Red 5 Comics and a whole cast of characters. Delving into fictional realities we meet many familiar characters.
On top of that is the Fictionauts themselves. With classic members and a mission to fix these different fictions.
The team seems pretty well laid out within some classic tropes, but there are some mysteries afoot.
We have the evil professor, with his own problems and the fact that he can't defeat the Fictionauts. He looks to be giving it all up, but things change. And this issue is the catalyst of this change.
This has a real classic sci-fi feel to it. There are the ray-guns and the 'commies' as well as characters from the page, screen and our goldfish bowls (really!)
I love the art style here, it feels fresh, yet retro too, with some good close up scenes - for example in the submarine - to some big spreads as well.
The bigger story here is just starting and I wonder what this will lead to - there are things underneath that they don't know, but there are some hinting threats.
If you are a fan of Top 10, then I think this is for you.
