From Broken Face Comics is the penultimate issue of Plainer Jane, with things going a little wrong…
PLAINER JANE is the darkly comic story of Jane Pearson, a seemingly ordinary teenage girl who becomes a brutally efficient killer for hire. With no training, no special skills, just her own cunning, brutality, and fearlessness, Jane leaves a trail of bodies behind her, ultimately going head to head with the feared and secretive criminal gang, The Nexus, in a war that could ultimately cost not only her life but the lives of everyone she loves.
In this issue (issue six, 'She’s Lost Control') we find Jane being pushed to her breaking point as she goes head to head with her most fearsome challenge yet, the scarred gang leader, Torald Tougard. We also explore the fallout of Lewey's decisions, and the rising suspicions of Jane's closest friend, Kat.
David Wilburn (Writer, Creator), Samir Simão (Sequential art), Tim West (Logos, lettering, print layout), Ralf Singh (Covers, Colourist) and Donna A Black (Rear Covers).
The penultimate part of this story has a lot going on. There is a larger concentration on the members of the Nexus, with some promises being made and some threats as well. This leads to an interesting point at the end of the story, as the fallout from this issue will be interesting.
We also get some more behind the police and their investigation - as well as Jane’s contact with the police. It is well put together, links up nicely with previous issues, and makes the finale something to look forward to.
As a penultimate issue, there is a good mix of action and thriller. With the meeting of the crime bosses and the fight at the end. There is a well-told part in the middle, with some good character building between Jane and her friend. I like the conversation here, it feels very natural.
The art, colouring and lettering are brilliant, with a lot to be told and a lot to be shown. It didn’t feel too busy but had some well-built-up panels and excellent action sequences.
This is an excellent read, and we are waiting for the final issue!
