From Image Comics this week, we return to Prodigy with a new story arc.
Edison Crane is the world's smartest man, but what happens when he's targeted by an entire CLUB of geniuses who also fly too close to the sun? Meet THE ICARUS SOCIETY.
Writer - Mark Millar, Artist, Cover Artist, Variant Cover - Artist Matteo Buffagni, Variant Cover Artist - Bill Sienkiewicz
Returning to the world of Edison Crane and it seems that Edison has a problem. His problem is that there is nothing to challenge him. He’s paying people to kidnap him, so he can have the physical and mental workout of escaping. Sometimes he does come off badly. He’s writing books in his head that no one will ever read, and then scrapping them on a whim. And then there is Lucius Tong who has grafted chimpanzee hands on himself and has been making people explode. Even he gives up without a fight.
Initially.
Then as we get through this hubris, we get to the plan against Crane - Tong has a larger plan, and it isn’t just him involved. We don’t get it all, but we do get the beginnings of The Icarus Society and what they are about and it looks like they will be a suitable foil to Crane.
This was an interesting beginning to a story. It did feel disjointed in places, but that is to reflect the mind of Crane and give us an idea of how things seem to him. Tong felt like a throwaway character at first, but looks to be something bigger - that is an interesting aspect.
I enjoyed the art in this and it works well with the shadows that Crane and the rest are working in. The look around Crane’s house was well done.
I don’t think it matters if you haven’t read the first arc - although you should and it would help - as you can slot right into this story.
A good read and enjoyable, with an interesting cliffhanger to get us ready for issue #2
