Review: Space Ghost Vol.2 #3
From Dynamite Comics
A new battle for Space Ghost in this third issue of the second volume from Dynamite Comics.
Ten-thousand years ago, the frozen steppes shook beneath the boot of a merciless conqueror... the Viking warrior known as TARKO THE TERRIBLE! But when this ancient warlord is found frozen in a block of ice, this time-lost destroyer will find himself going head-to-head with the cosmic vigilante Space Ghost! Can our heroes rescue Dr. Contra from Tarko's brutal revenge? Or will this threat from the past wreak epic destruction upon the future?!?
Written by David Pepose, Art by Jonathan Lau, Colors by Andrew Dalhouse, and Lettering by Taylor Esposito
This was a delightful and action-packed issue. As a done-in-one story, it has an excellent beginning, middle and end where each character has time to shine.
This includes the time-lost Viking, with some excellent storytelling and furious fighting!
Tarko is a man out of time, frozen in ice and now thawed in the future and into a world he doesn’t recognise. Although he thinks he does, with magic (Science) to fight against, he believes it is just another foe to vanquish and more land to conquer.
Space Ghost does his best to stop the mayhem, but the brains of the kids (and their grandfather) work out the best way to deal with this attack, and it works out in a clever way that could be returned to in the future.
There is also the awkward moment when the masked kids meet their grandfather—is there any suspicion there? Perhaps, and I’m sure that will be something for a future issue.
This was a powerful issue, with a great villain of the week—although he isn’t as villainous as first thought—and a clever ending that wraps things up nicely. The artwork does an excellent job, with explosive panels and great colouring.
