Review: Speed Racer #2
From Mad Cave Studios
The second issue of the fast-paced Speed Racer is out now from Mad Cave Studios.
With his father Pops in the hospital after suffering a near-fatal heart attack, Speed Racer needs to come up with $1 million fast to pay for a transplant — and the only way he can come up with the cash in time is to win the Formula X World Championship! But as Speed will discover, he's racing against professionals like the ruthless SNAKE OILER now — and they all play for keeps!

After the explosive first issue, we start to get into the reason behind the story. With a prize to win, Speed has his work cut out for getting past the first hurdle.
This issue does an excellent job of setting up and providing some thrilling race action.
First up is the setup, and we get a look at the solution to the Racer’s sponsorship troubles and a way into the race. There is a possibility that there is an enemy made for the future, too, but we will see how that pans out. Next is the opposition. Evil and moustache twirling make an excellent foil for the racer and his team, with some clever use of history to go with them.
Then there is also the tease of Racer X….
The action was brilliant, with some great racing moments and some clever uses of the various skills and technical powers of the cars. Some fast motions here, and a tense finish to the end of the race. The advice side was well done and makes much sense - both for the character and the story being told.
I’m already looking forward to issue #3.
