Review - Sven The Groundhog: Savior From the Stars #2
From Weird Brain Entertainment
After another successful Kickstarter, you can look forward to the return of the furry alien in Sven The Groundhog: Savior From the Stars #2 from Weird Brain Entertainment.
He’s here! Sven, a groundhog from outer space, has arrived on Earth to save us all. But, his mission to Washington, D.C. hasn’t gone to plan. The evil Fungoidians, a sentient race of carnivorous fungi determined to eat the talking whistlepig, are making his job that much harder. And his only ally, Sarah Woods, a local reporter Sven has recruited, seems more hindrance than help, but why is she so important to his objective? And who are the mysterious Candelabra of the Six Spheres, and what secrets do they hold for the future of our world? All will be revealed in this next mind-blowing issue of Sven the Groundhog: Savior from the Stars!

Sven returns—and things get wild fast!
In this second issue, the story wastes no time throwing Sven and Sarah into the deep end. There’s a real sense that the world is opening up around them as they encounter new characters and factions, and the lingering question through it all is: whose side are these people actually on? That uncertainty fuels the entire chapter.
The issue is cleverly constructed, balancing action, comedy, and that deliciously eerie X-Files–style mystery. Honestly, when aliens are involved, leaning into that X-Files vibe is always a win in my book. It gives everything an unsettling edge without losing the fun.
The two alien species we meet are handled particularly well. Each one has clear strengths and weaknesses, and the comic does a fantastic job showing just how brutal and dangerous the Fungoidians can be. Their scenes are messy, violent, and genuinely intimidating—exactly what you want from a threat that pushes the stakes sky-high for humanity. You really feel how heavily the odds are stacked against us.
Meanwhile, Sven and Sarah cross paths with the Candelabra of the Six Spheres—a group that initially feels like a bit of a joke, almost comic relief. But once their backstory unfolds, and we learn about their connection to Sven’s species (and even to those who came before him), they become far more intriguing. That shift from goofy to unsettling adds real tension. Something about them just doesn’t sit right, and that unease pays off with a creepy, well-earned cliffhanger that sets up the next issue beautifully.
The art continues to be one of the series’ big strengths. The darker, more horrific elements—especially the fungus-based carnage—contrast wonderfully with Sven’s brighter, more cheerful personality. The artist nails both the monstrous alien designs and the more grounded human moments, giving the whole issue a rich visual range.
All in all, this series is shaping up to be something special. It’s already brimming with twists, surprises, and lore, and it feels like we’ve only just scratched the surface. If you haven’t picked it up yet, now’s definitely the time to jump in and catch up—you won’t regret it.
