A new beginning for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and we get a couple of looks into the world now in this special issue from IDW Publishing.
What’s the world like without the TMNT? Since their time-spanning victory over Armaggon, the Turtles have started to pursue other interests, leaving a void in New York among humans and mutants alike.
Authors: Jason Aaron, and Tom Waltz
Artists: Gavin Smith, and Chris Burnham
I thought this was a good issue. It allows us to get a taste of what to come if you are a seasoned TMNT reader, while new readers can also get a feel of what to expect and the way of the world.
Long Way From Home gives us a look at the one of the brothers. He isn’t in a good place - both figuratively and mentally. I like the build of it all, and the comment about one of the other brothers made me smile. The ending was a good one and showed some interesting compassion and something to think about. There was a good mix of action and character moments, with some gritty art.
Monster Island is a dark horror story with a very different dimension. I like how Old Hob is shown in this story, with some tough decisions being made and an outcome that will probably have ramifications down the line. Interspersed with that are some good character and setup scenes from Mutant Town, which will also add to the larger stories being told.
I enjoyed the ending of this one.
A great issue to get us back into the TMNT.
