Review: Void Witch #1
By Gideon Brimingham
After a successful Kickstarter, the first part of Void Witch is available to buy from creator Gideon Brimingham.
An excellent setup, with a combination of far-future science fiction and mystical elements thrown in as well. This can be a tough sell, but this initial issue nails that aspect. It gives us magic, witches and nature, combined with ray guns, space and starships. With that, there are the mysterious powers of the Void Witches - or in this case, the last Void Witch. Alone and content, she is on a remote planet and looking after those around her. Until there are some unwanted villains.
At this juncture, we get the unwelcome attack. These witchfinders seem a bit of fodder, but this makes it a perfect point to show us the power that Vega has, although it is well hinted at earlier in the story. I get the impression that there are some similarities between the destruction of the Void Witches and witch-hunting in olden times, with the nature aspects here.
This is only a taste of what is to come, though, and the reason for the appearance of the witch hunters is apparent with a slimy individual looking to retain the services of the Vega. He seems to always get what he wants, and we get a good understanding of both him and his team in this issue, as well as an initial look at what the quest is to be for this mini-series. That sets us up nicely to look forward to what is to come.
I really enjoyed the retro-style art in this comic. With some excellent colouring, and even while reading it digitally, I could virtually feel the paper. It gave me flashbacks to my youth. This style works well with both the story and the world-building. A treat!
After that excellent setup, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.
