Reviews: Grimm Tales Of Terror #5 & Zenescope Legends
Out this week from Zenescope
Horror and monsters this week in two new releases this week from Zenescope Entertainment - Grimm Tales Of Terror #5 and Zenescope Legends Spring 2025: Myths and Monsters.
Grimm Tales Of Terror Volume 5 #5
One of the oldest mysteries of the universe is, “Where do dreams and nightmares come from?” Something even more concerning is the place that lies between the realities, connecting the waking and dreaming worlds, when the dreamer’s body freezes in a sleeping paralysis -- and we are stuck in the world where the Hat Man dwells! Some call it superstition, others a disruption in the neural pathways of the brain. But those who understand the truth know The Hat Man is not a figment of the imagination, nor is he a tale to be told. The Hat Man is primordial. He is something to be feared. And if you’re unlucky...The Hat Man is coming for you next!

A new tale of terror featuring something that may give many the creeps.
I like the concept of the Hat Man and the sleep paralysis aspect of the story, but I do feel that the story and perhaps the concept were a little rushed in this story. I know that these Tales of Terror are one-shot stories, but I do think that this story may have been spread over a large-sized special or two issues.
Nevertheless, this did have some good art, and the panelling of the story was well thought out. The Hat Man was especially creepy, and I liked the references to pop culture and similar instances in other cultures.
There is a suitably twisted bittersweet ending, and it makes some sense in the story's realm. Carrying on the legacy, so to speak!

Zenescope Legends Spring Edition 2025: Myths & Monsters
Don't miss this mythic and monstrously over-sized action-packed issue collecting untold tales from across the Zenescope Universe! With three never-before released stories featuring Man Goat and The Bunnyman, Pooh, and the mysterious origin of Fury!
Writers: Joe Brusha & Noah Mitchell, Artwork: Jordi Tarragona, Alessandro Uezu & Jordi Perez, Colors: Walter Pereyra, Grostieta & Maxflan Araujo, Letters: Taylor Esposito (Of Ghost Glyph Studios), Editor: David Wohl, and Production & Design: Christopher Cote
A trio of stories here, giving us some beginnings for, I’m sure, some new stories to look forward to in the future.
I haven’t read to many of the Man Goat and The Bunnyman adventures, but this was a fast-paced and frantic beginning. Using underground lair made it a tight battle, but the goblins were certainly on the back foot before the Queen came in. It gives the duo a good foe and minions to face as well.
Fury makes a good showing with a classic flashback featuring a clash with a combination of Nazis and the occult. It’s full of some excellent action, as well as a good build to take us the to present day. The tease for the future looks like something that could build into something big.
It’s always good to see the return of Pooh. This was an entertaining issue, with Pooh returning to find out some information. He gets a whole lot more. It was funny and serious in equal parts and certainly has something in place for the future…
