I read two new comics from IDW Publishing this week. From the world of Godzilla, it’s more monster action with Mothra: Queen Of Monsters #1 and in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe, it’s Nightwatcher #6.
Mothra: Queen Of Monsters #1
Mothra has fallen after a fearsome battle with a terrifying new kaiju, Antra. Without its protector, the world has entered into a state of desolation. Kaiju roam freely, and what remains of humankind has been forced into hiding.
But all hope is not lost! Mira is a young woman living in the wasteland, who believes she lost her entire family in Mothra’s final stand. That is, until her missing twin shows up at her door with two fairies! If her sister is to be believed, Mira might hold the key to the rebirth of Mothra and the Earth’s return to normalcy. They just have to travel back in time and get its egg from the Jurassic period first.

Moving away from Godzilla for a while…
And we’re onto Mothra - Queen Of Monsters and a monster I know less about than Godzilla. Even so, that you don’t really need to, as although you jump straight into the action in this issue, it gets you on the right page.
Although Mothra is dead and this is about those left behind. It is a clever bit of storytelling with a pair of twins working through their separation and having gone their separate ways, they are back together to help make things right.
It all sounds pretty simple yes?
But no, there are other monsters out there and then there are the monsters they are going to visit - yes, we get some mystical time-travel, that makes a lot of sense in the story, but is going to thrust the duo into more monster fighting.
A good hook for the series and the following issue, and there is more to this story than meets the eye as we get something on the sly in the last pages!
There is some excellent art here, with big battles, cramped battles and some excellent sisterly action too. The mystic aspects are well done with the colours too.
I want to see more like this!
Get it at Forbidden Planet:
TMNT: Nightwatcher #6
Nightwatcher is beaten and heartbroken from the epic conclusion to the first arc of the series.
As she puts the pieces of her life back together and debates whether or not she wants to continue being the Nightwatcher, Lao Ban tries to offer her a place in his future.
A future that is great for mutants and awful for everyone else. And in her wounded stateNightwatcher gives it serious thought. Is her soul in the balance and Lao Ban’s for the taking?!

What’s it like with the devil on your shoulder? That’s what I could think of in this penultimate issue.
Lao Ban is taking this Kingpin role to heart, and it works so well as he drips poison into our hero’s ear. It’s excellently done, interlaced with the hunt and battle against the armour/golem of the Nightwatcher.
It’s all about finding their place in Mutant Town, and I love how it reaches a crescendo for the final issue on the rooftops.
There is dark and light here and some real soul-searching moments in this clever issue.
