This week, two new comics from Image Comics were written by Mark Millar. Some thoughts on The Ambassadors #4 and Nemesis: Reloaded #5.
The Ambassadors #4
Our most action-packed issue yet moves the story to Brazil, where a Catholic priest fighting drug lords is offered a spot on this international super-team-but he's happy just doing God's work in the Barrios.
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Olivier Coipel
Building on the role and type of the Ambassadors in this issue, we go to South America, and this issue had some excellent twists and actions to go with it.
I like the way there is a reluctance to join from the priest, and his reasoning behind that is well played out and honourable - regrettably, there are those who are not so.
This issue plays more on the characters involved well, with some good character-building and ideas behind them all. I like their different backgrounds and the reason they were nominated. There is still the scope for betrayal here, and there is the competition to worry about, and this is dealt with well at the end of the story.
The art works out perfectly with the story, with the majority in the slums of Brazil, with dark colours and excellent use of light in various scenes. No spoilers, but there are some well-shown twists here.
This was another fun read, with more to come next issue of someone very different.
Nemesis: Reloaded #5
It's the grand finale. The big confrontation between Nemesis and the man he's really wanted all along. We had to go big with this issue so we could show off JORGE's art as much as we wanted to. This is a masterpiece. Order big!
(W) Mark Millar (A) Jorge Jimenez (CA) Javier Fernandez
Let’s get the ending out of the way first.
Holy Shit!
That is what I said after getting to the ending here, and it’s big. It’s not often I am as audible as this when reading a comic, sometimes a chuckle or a groan, but this issue got this out of me. I also contacted friends I know who are fans and told them to avoid spoilers as I wanted them to react similarly. It was amazingly played, and credit to the team for building up to this.
Back to the meat of the story.
This issue wraps up nicely and deals with Nemesis's issues with the City's Mayor. We get into the depths of what happened all those years ago, and some good flashbacks are shown. The action in the story's second half is fantastic, with some special moments and well-plotted and shown fights.
After the revelations with the Mayor, we get some good closure - both with the Mayor and with Nemesis - answering a question from the beginning. I liked that finish, which gave me a wry chuckle as it played out.
This was an excellent finish and builds towards more to come, which I am now totally hyped for.
You need to pick up this series!
