From the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe, there are two new titles this week from IDW Publishing - Mutant Nation #2 and Nightwatcher #3.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation #2
Assist an old enemy in breaking into a highly restricted, heavily guarded, famously classified government facility? It’s not exactly the freewheeling road trip Raphael had in mind, but with Pepperoni’s life in the balance, he’s diving in headfirst. It’s the point of no return as Raph and Metalhead breach Area 51! Surrounded by the E.P.F.’s coveted technology, Metalhead’s motives come to light.
He’ll stop at nothing to commandeer the secrets of this dimension! Time is running out for Raph to find Pepperoni and use his strength for good but a clean plan is off the table when old friends call out for help.

This series looks to be an excellent addition to the TMNT universe. It examines some different adventures and links in nicely to what is going on in the larger story.
First up, there are the adventures of Raph and Metalhead. We get some excellent action and fighting going on, and there is also a nice flashback and backstory to Metalhead. It's a good idea for newer readers. This story features some excellent artwork with the action and finishes with an interesting cliffhanger that will probably have some ramifications in other stories.
Casey Jones is in with the Foot Clan and is a partial conscience to their leader. I like the fight scene as he is sparring and looks like he has a negligible effect on the other members. I enjoyed the part with Bebop and Rocksteady and their planned trip to Las Vegas - that should be interesting….
…hey! Isn’t that where Raph wants to get to….!

Nightwatcher #3
In the wake of the M-Bomb that was dropped in Union Square over a year ago, many New Yorkers’ lives were turned upside down as they struggled to adapt to their new normal as human-born mutants.
As the social media circus descends on a new mutant who turned to crime after her life was destroyed, Nightwatcher seeks to find her first and discover the full story.
The supposedly simple case rapidly gets more complicated as more details are revealed, though, and it’s up to Nightwatcher to determine who truly needs justice.

I enjoyed this issue. Not only does it set up the first big story arc for the character, giving us a ‘Kingpin’ to go against, but it also sets the tone for the character and their methods and level of crime. The brothers may have fought against some big bad, but this shows a way of helping people and getting information.
I like how it flitted between the story, with some exciting flashbacks from a certain point of view. This showed a street-level side, helping those who wouldn’t usually be on the radar.
Some excellent dark art, and exciting action scenes that don’t feature the Nightwatcher.
