Reviews - Transformers: Last Bot Standing & The Rocketeer: The Great Race
Two new comics out now from IDW Publishing...
From IDW Publishing, we get to the completion of this latest Rocketeer story, and the Transformers story continues:
Transformers: Last Bot Standing #3
The Last Bot Standing has finally come face-to-face with the Visitors. Neither can believe the other still exists. But the Visitors are gracious, in their way. They want to help the last Cybertronian…but he knows what the Visitors are, he knows what they do, he knows what they bring, and he’s not going down without a fight!
by Nick Roche (Author), E.J. Su (Artist)
We learn much more about what has been happening over the generations on this planet. Rodimus details how he came to be here in this condition and why he is alone.
The details of why he is alone are glossed over slightly, with one of his companions dying in an accident, the other…dying in more aggressive means. The long history of Rodimus being on this planet is well shown, with some good framing techniques and information being passed down. It also drills home how long it has been.
The other ‘bots have their issues, and while they seem nice enough, their intentions are not good, and it looks like they have something to fight for. Rodimus seems to be up against it here, and we are leading into an interesting final issue.
This was a good issue, with enough information to keep us going. The art is good fun, especially the ‘classic’ Hot Rod!
The Rocketeer: The Great Race #4
This is it: the Rocketeer versus the Iron Baron in a race to the death for the ultimate prize! Betrayal and danger abound, relationships crumble, and new allies are revealed! Who will emerge the final victor of The Great Race?
by Stephen Mooney (Author, Artist)
In the final part of this fast-paced mini-series, we get some closure and some potential adventures to be picked up in the future.
I was pleased to see that Stephen Mooney was writing and on art for the Rocketeer. And this final issue brings it all together. There is a race to the finish line with some fast-paced flying action. On top of that, there is the risk of the foreign agents and what they are all after.
The finish is quite twisted, and there are some good moments and well-told aspects. The epilogue is interesting, and they suit the storyline. There is some interesting scope going forward for the character here.
I love the art, and the style works well in this - the flight aspects and the parts on the ground all work out well.
