Coming soon, and hot on the heels of the initial images and the trailer, the Rogue Trooper has had its first viewing, and the reactions of those who have a history with the GI have been released.
I am looking forward to watching it!
The original creators behind the classic British comic Rogue Trooper have praised the eagerly anticipated movie adaptation written and directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft, Mute).
Writer Gerry Finley-Day (Dan Dare) praised the movie’s “bags of action” while artist Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Kingsman) called it “completely mind-blowing”, following a private screening ahead of its premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on 22 June.
A special video interview is released today on 2000 AD‘s social media channels, giving fans some of Finley-Day and Gibbons’s reaction to seeing the movie for the first time, with the pair praising its action, and the way the storyline drew on the Rogue Trooper stories they made together.
“I thought it was just very, very entertaining”, says Gibbons. “And it’s great that the movie opens with what Gerry and I did originally — it’s really heartwarming. I think if you want to be entertained for a couple of hours, I can’t think of anything better; it made me laugh and was just spectacular to look at.”
“You’ve got a good storyline, you’ve got great visuals”, adds Finley-Day, “I think you can’t lose with this. You’re in for a very exciting couple of hours. I didn’t expect that that to be in that league, and these little touches that were there. It’s lovely to see.”
Based on the comic from the pages of legendary title 2000 AD, Rogue Trooper tells the story of 19, a ‘Genetic Infantryman’, who finds himself the sole survivor of an invasion force in the brutal war between the Norts and Southers on the toxic wastelands of the planet Nu Earth.
The film features breakout talent Aneurin Barnard (The Goldfinch, Dunkirk) as the Rogue Trooper alongside Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Dunkirk), Daryl McCormack (Bad Sisters; Good Luck To You, Leo Grande), and Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9, Saltburn), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Earth), Alice Lowe (Black Mirror), Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, Hugo) and Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings).
Director Duncan Jones said: “We created something that had Gerry wanting to talk about the friendships created in the military and how the film captured that, and Dave thrilled over how the big tanks he drew in the original comic were even bigger now! Honestly, that means more to me than just about anything.”
Duncan Jones will be appearing at San Diego Comic Con on 25 July (2-3pm PDT at the Rebellion stand, booth number 2121) to meet fans and sign a limited run of the Rogue Trooper hero image.
