Spotlight: Bandits of Batavia #1
From Beyondtopia
With the Kickstarter for the second issue live now on Kickstarter - have no fear you can get a catch-up issue - I had a look at Bandits Of Batavia #1 from Beyondtopia.
"Inspired by Indonesian folklore, our story begins in 1865 when a massive WILDFIRE burns down the Rawa Belong Village, causing many residents to lose family, friends, and homes. The police enact a large-scale manhunt for those responsible: a group of supernatural bandits - the BANDITS OF BATAVIA."
Bandits of Batavia #1 is a 32-page action-packed supernatural thriller created by Bryan Valenza (Marvel, DC, Image..) and co-written with Henry Barajas (DC, Image, IDW). centered on Silat Martial Arts, bandits with supernatural (Ajian) abilities, and heists set in Indonesia!
Jumping into this first issue and we are right into the action. It's not only the battle but the mystical and magical side are extremely striking. This extended scene sets us up for the rest of the story and makes an excellent introduction.
Following on and we get some well thought-out character building, setting up the world in which this story is set. I really like the interactions between them all and in this family feel there are some big problems on the horizon.
The style of this comic is very professional, with some excellent storytelling, melding action, magic, crime and life! It places this first issue will giving readers a well-plotted arc to not only enjoy, but also gunning for what comes next.
I really like the art style, not only are the tones and colours perfect for the style and setting of the story, but also it is excellent on the eye and makes the more fantastic aspects pop! The art does an excellent job with not only the action, but the character moments and subtle inflections.
This is a series to watch!
