Spotlight: Espresso Detective
With four issues out, this hard-boiled detective story covers a lot of ground. I looked at the first four issues of Espresso Detective from Eric Erdek.
There’s a pain inside him and it’s a killer. A dark, fanged tornado that left a vacuum in the place his heart should be. A place he tries to fill with Blues, Sex, Espresso… and a Cafe Racer drive to rescue lost things. Is it super powers, magic or just luck that makes him almost unbeatable in a fight and hit eventing he aims at? Only his therapist-shaman knows… but is HE real or imaginary?

This is undoubtedly some fast-paced detective work here. With a great cast of characters and some horrible villains (who you have no sympathy for), we get one hell of a ride as some clever aspects are brought into this story.
Kicking off this story with a great introduction, we not only get a good look at Sanchez and the commentary he provides as things happen around him but also some of those in the supporting cast. This works well on two fronts, as there are those who are not his fans but appreciate that he can do things the cops can’t.
That leads nicely into the villains of the piece with some severe and nasty people smuggling going on there is a lot of time and area to cover with the story stretching across countries and time zones. We flit back and forth as the story progresses until the two come to a head.
This and the sub-stories that build into the whole are well done and link together well.
The artwork well combines the gritty city with the wide-open spaces and countryside, with some well-laid-out scenes and clever framing of events.
I hit the story with all four issues and found myself drawn into it. Some of the events are totally unpredictable, and there are some clever moments. The story's cast is pretty tight, and there are some more fantastical aspects of the story, which make it an exciting read and add a special dimension to it all.
I love the twists and turns in this story and want to see where this goes next, as I can’t guess!
