Set in the 1980s and bursting with enough pop-culture goodness to make your action figures do the electric boogaloo, SPOOKIDS mixes science fiction and monster comics together to give you a fun and funny series for all ages.

Growing up reading the Beano, I have always had a madcap affinity with the stories within. So the chance to read some new stories with that in mind was a chance I could not pass up.

SPOOKIDS brings us all that, with a great cross between some excellent humour and invention in the story, with some nice references that we older readers will appreciate and enjoy.

Starting as a standard kids’ adventure, things take rapid turns as we find our heroes battling robots, creatures, and much more. We have some excellent standard comic-book tropes here, and they are brilliantly played for laughs.

There is a lot to get into this story, and the episodic format works well if you read it online (via Ko-Fi) or get the volumes in one go (digitally or in print). I enjoy the style of the storytelling and the way the action moves all around. Throwing in some references that Gen-Xers will get (me), and we get a fun read for the family. There is a reference guide for the younger readers too.

The art and panelling are equally fun, with some excellent action scenes and great cartoon reactions. There is some bombastic colouring, which all adds to the fun of reading these stories.

This is certainly worth checking out and getting invested in!
