Papercutz is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of THE INVENTOR: BOOK ONE: THE DANGEROUS DISCOVERY, a captivating new graphic novel written and illustrated by Lars Henrik Eriksen. Set to publish from Papercutz on January 23, 2023, this inventive series marks the beginning of an exciting journey into the vibrant world of Mata-Mata.
Join young protagonist Cobalt Cogg and his grandfather, Alfred, as they navigate the vibrant island of Mata-Mata. Cobalt dreams of becoming an inventor like his grandpa, but when an accident involving one of Alfred's inventions occurs, his hopes appear shattered. Will Cobalt find the strength to overcome adversity alongside his loyal friend Linnea and his supportive family? Prepare to embark on a thrilling adventure filled with joy, grief, creativity, and a mysterious energy source known as Alpha-Energy in this fantastical coming-of-age graphic novel.
Lars Henrik Eriksen, the talented Norwegian artist and illustrator behind THE INVENTOR, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I find it incredibly exciting to know that children in the US will soon have the opportunity to read 'The Inventor' and get to know the aspiring inventor Cobalt, his friend Linnea, and the colorful turtles and people of Mata-Mata. I wish for children and youth to see the joy they can get from creating. It does not have to be creating inventions per se, but it could be creating visual art or music or writing etc. I hope the joy I got from making this book is visible, and also contagious. Creating is not about being talented or skillful, but I think it should be about putting your heart into what you are making.”
Eriksen noted that the book was heavily inspired by Manga: “From the top of my head, some of the anime/manga titles that have inspired me a lot are One Piece for its boundless creativity, Gurren Lagann for its brilliant escalation of the story and the growth of its characters, Cowboy Bebop for its environmental storytelling and music, and Fullmetal Alchemist for how its able to take one concept, alchemy, and explore it to its fullest. However, I haven't only been inspired by manga and anime, but also by lots of other properties, like Spider-Man or Carl Barks and Don Rosa's Donald Duck comics, and also lots of Scandinavian stories and books.”
THE INVENTOR, Book One: Dangerous Discovery [9781545811481; Trade Paperback; 152pp; $12.99; Ages 7-12] is on-sale on January 23, 2023. It is available wherever books are sold, including Amazon, Bookshop, and Barnes & Noble.
In more Papercutz news, there is a new book coming in April 2024 - Double Booking: Tail of the Mummy Cat a double-sided, multi-POV flipbook OGN that follows siblings Otto and Nan on a heart pounding adventure to Egypt– created by real life brother and sister creator duo Kim Shearer and Chas Pangburn!
Mad Cave Studios and Papercutz are pleased to announce a brand new OGN for young readers: Double Booking: Tail of the Mummy Cat, by brother and sister team Chas! Pangburn and Kim Shearer.
Join siblings Otto and Nan on a double stuffed adventure to Egypt, where each of them has a completely different experience!
While on a trip to Egypt, two siblings, Otto and Nan, stumble upon a sarcophagus. And they accidentally free a mummy cat from a pharaoh's chamber! Now tasked with finding it, their resulting adventure has them exploring the city, learning historical facts, saving each other from danger, and discovering truths about life. What's more, they're going to survive the same adventure – twice! See both perspectives in this flip graphic novel, written by real-life siblings Kim Shearer and Chas! Pangburn.
Designed as a double-sided flip book to showcase each sibling's unique perspective on the events they experience, Double Booking allows readers to follow both Otto and Nan’s individual stories. Readers can start with either tale! While certain scenes cover the same event from different perspectives, others deviate greatly. “Our goal with Double Booking is to establish that there are two sides to every story,” Pangburn said. “While not all facts may be seen/known by one party, you sometimes have to place your trust in other individuals. Sibling rivalries can sometimes create a teachable moment!”
“I know first-hand how impactful comics can be on a young person’s relationship with reading. From the ages of 6 to 11, I would ONLY read Archie comics! I didn’t realize it then, but every time I opened one of those comic books, I was learning about narrative structure and word choice and conflict and a long list of foundational skills. Comics made me a reader!” said Kim Shearer, the 2012 Kentucky teacher of the year. “This love of reading led to my career as an English teacher and librarian. And to now be a creator of my own comic— I can’t help but think of my younger self, and I know she would be so excited, so proud! I’ve created a comic she would love, and I got to do it with my brother and an incredible artist.”
I'm beyond excited for readers to join siblings Otto and Nan as they chase Princess Tiaa--the adorable "Mummy Cat"--throughout Egypt. Co-writing and collaborating with my older sister, Kim Pangburn Shearer, is a bonding experience I'll forever cherish, and we're fortunate to have our words brought to life by the ever-talented Nic Touris. With TWO stories told through TWO unique perspectives with TWO differing art styles in ONE book, we're offering a little bit of everything for middle-grade readers. Humor, action, the supernatural, emotional beats, and educational components--it's an adventure for all!
The Principles of Necromancy #1 and Silicon Bandits #1 are the first new series from Magma Comix after the announcement of the creators on board.
Magma Comix is kicking off 2024 with two new exciting series including THE PRINCIPLES OF NECROMANCY and SILICON BANDITS!
The Principles of Necromancy #1 (Apr. 3)
The phenomenal writing duo of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (Outsiders, Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek) return to creator-owned comics with this macabre series brought to life by the evocatively horrific art of Eamon Winkle. Each issue features a variant cover by Jana Heidersdorf (Dark Souls)!
There is no such thing as magic.
The City King has driven the barbarian hordes to the edge of the world - ushering in an age of reason and medicine. But in the dark woods beyond his reach, where the last pagans still keep their ancient ways, a single man of civilization is about to show the true meaning of "medical miracle." His goal: to overcome death itself. And god help the man or king who stands in his way.
Behold the glorious and gut-wrenching work of Doctor Jakob Eyes, the world's first necromancer.
Series co-creators Kelly and Lanzing spoke of the project:
“The Principles of Necromancy is our first creator-owned comics series since 2016 - and it came out of a mutual hunger to tell a fantasy narrative while also being birthed through a wide-ranging discussion about the ways magic is approached in such settings. We talked a lot about the strange figure that a doctor cuts in our own lives - that help you hope you never need - and thought what it might look like to turn that character into an iconic wizard-esque figure in a setting bereft of magic. If you only know us from our work at Marvel and DC, I think Principles of Necromancy should feel like a natural evolution. It’s our character-oriented horror from One Bad Day: Clayface mixed with the strange sadness and surreal world building from our Guardians of the Galaxy. But this is also a world unlike any we’ve played in before - closer to Conan or Berserk than to our creator-owned pop albums like Joyride. It’s a whole new flavor for the Hivemind - and one we’re having a ton of fun putting together.”
Silicon Bandits #1 (Apr. 10)
Crime novelist and comic author Jason Starr (Wolverine Max, Ant-Man: Natural Enemy) reunites with Casual Fling collaborator Dalibor Talajić (Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe) in a tale with enough twists and turns to fry your circuits! Each issue features a variant cover by Goran Parlov (The Punisher)!
In a near future where automation has caused mass unemployment, programmers Kenji and Aurora’s careers seemed safe. But when they are suddenly fired, the couple hatches a desperate plan: assemble the perfect heist crew out of androids they programmed. The ensuing crime spree goes perfectly… until betrayal and sentience emerge in equally devastating turns!
“Like a lot of people, I’m fascinated by artificial intelligence and all of the ethical and legal issues the tech raises, and I felt that telling a crime story with android criminals would be an exciting and compelling way into exploring these themes” says series writer Jason Starr. “I’ve been telling people that Silicon Bandits is Blade Runner meets Ocean’s Eleven, which pretty much describes the tone and vibe that artist Dalibor Talajic and I are going for with this book.”
“You might say I am the William Shatner of comics,” said Dalibor Talajić. “Put me on anything and I'll have the time of my life doing it.”
The Principles of Necromancy #1 and Silicon Bandits #1 hit shelves this April and are now available for preorder.
