Advance Review - Never by Night: Disturbing Passages Into the Unknown - Volume 2
Coming Soon
Last year, I had an advanced look at a new horror anthology by writer Jonathan Chance. Well, spooky season is on its way, and a new volume of horror is coming in Never by Night: Disturbing Passages Into the Unknown—Volume 2.
As before it will contain four brand new horror tales featuring incredible industry artists and new up-and-coming talent in one book. This year's stories include; Late Night Host, Video Van Man, Now All is Silver Blue, Collect Them All with the anthology including illustrators from Spawn, Bloodshot and many more.
We get an excellent selection of four stories written by Jonathan Chance and featuring different art teams.
Late Night Host (Illustrated by Joao Azeitona Vierira, Colours by Ren Spiller and Letters by Adel E. Talemi)
This gave me a real ‘Invasion Of The Body Snatchers’ feel with some excellent back-and-forth between the alien and the host. I like the use of both the characters and their power as well as the use of the dream sequences. You’re not sure what to trust and that final panel leaves it totally to the imagination.
Video Van Man (Illustrated by Mike Bogdanovic, Colours by Theresa Chiechi and Letters by Micah Myers)
This is a more down-to-earth issue, with a great buildup. The video van man certainly does give off some creepy vibes, and the way this is done is very clever. The level of escalation, along with the expressions in the story, makes this a gripping tale.
Now All Is Silver Blue (Illustrated and lettered by Emilio Utrera)
At first, I thought of The Thing, but this one is a little darker in human terms. The hopelessness, the hope and the vengeance are really well played out, as is the use of the snow and ice juxtaposed with the shadows by firelight.
Collect Them All (Illustrated by Rodel Noora, Colours by Alzir Alves and Letters by Maria Letizia Mirabella)
Oof! Wow! I really liked this one, and would like to see this story expanded more in the future. Again, the ending is left to the imagination, with the chaos and death of before. There is a nice twist of the main characters here and some shocking moments. I love the art and the colouring in this one.
This is an excellent anthology - meeting my requirements with anthologies where there should be something for everyone - I enjoyed it all and the mix of stories works really well. Now we need more for next year!
