Many, many moons ago, I reviewed a comic that was available on the Sony PSP. Yes, you could read comics on it.
The comic that I read1 was The Indifference Engine. When I got an early look at the new comic-reading app Fable, I saw that the same comic was available, so I used it as my benchmark.
I signed up for Fable in 2023, and I must be honest. I had forgotten about it. I met many people and I was interested in this new app.
Fast forward to now, and I got to check it out.
From the beginning, I was happy to see how easy it was to get into. Yes, there was a beta login number to use, but I imagine that this aspect will be removed for new users when it is on general release. And then you are straight into it.
Along with The Indifference Engine, there is a good selection of comics. You can see some of them in the image above; if you want something different to read, this is a good app. I was especially pleased to see Black Mumba on there and would advise checking that out.
Once selected, the reading experience is pretty smooth and slick. With a vertical read, it goes quite seamlessly, and I didn’t experience any juddering or lag.
Yes, there are still aspects to be worked out, such as buying new comics. But as a beta version, it is worth checking out, and hopefully, things will happen fast.
You can check out more details and get on the waiting list here:
Along with the comic reading, there are also some tools for creators to convert their comics. It's a good idea, and it gets buy-in from the creators.
This was in 2011 - wow!
