As featured in the last Fund-Me-Friday, Reanimator Inc is coming soon to Kickstarter with issues #1-3 available and I had the chance to look through all three.
Reanimator & From Beyond meet Dante's Inferno in the Lovecraftian Nine Circles of Hell. A 128 page US-sized full-colour graphic novel.
Imagine if you died, your body could be atomically uploaded into an AI, repaired, then Reanimated atom-by-atom. Would you be the same person you were before you died? Would you remember the events of your death? In the time between death and Reanimation, where would your soul wander?
What if, before your soul returned to your Reanimated body, something elseโsomething From Beyondโtook occupance?
Writer: Andy Perry, Artist: Lyndon White & Editor: Claire Napier
Cleverly combining science, horror, religion and big business, the Reanimator series is a tightly written story, along with all the elements mentioned before, along with some well-thought-out relationships and character moments.
Looking at death as the โfinal frontierโ, a challenge to be defeated by science seems like a good idea in one way. Still, all that, morally and ethically, makes this a challenging idea for the characters involved. The addition of the relationship issues here, between father and son, husband and wife, and more, makes this a very volatile situation.
In the ethical issues of bringing back someone from the dead, we get the link to the fantastical and religious items of this story. Heaven and hell exist, and they have their views over this controversial technology. Heaven is fighting against those being reanimated, while hell seems to use this gap left by souls to advance their agenda. This is not good from both sides, and human interactions are delving deeper into this issue.
Overall, this is a fantastic story, which builds in some well-crafted science and fantasy elements. With some excellent character moments and building those aspects, the human elements will link science and religion.
The artwork does an amazing amount of work, with science, the afterlife, the ether and more combined in some great scenes, crossing smaller, tight panels to some amazing vistas with monsters and scenery. There is some excellent uses of light and colour in the artwork, making special aspects pop off the page and screen.
This is a story you can really immerse yourself into, with incredible visuals and colours. A dark story, combining artwork and storytelling and a look into the now and the afterlife.
