I reviewed the excellent Exodus Z #1 from Comics Unknown recently. Along with a current Kickstarter for the second issue (along with a catch-up option), there is also the chance to get a new horror anthology comic from them: Phantasmagoria.
Prepare to be thrilled with our collection of nine indie horror stories that'll keep you on the edge of your seat!
I always think that the anthology format for horror comics fits very nicely! When it is ongoing, it seems to be difficult to keep the shocks and suspense consistent as we move along. That is why Phantasmagoria works well as a comic - combining the anthology read, along with new creators and different stories.
This anthology combines some classic horror, some ‘future shocks’ style reading as well as teases towards future comics.
This combination is excellent, with some gruesome deaths and scary moments, it has some serious stories and some with a suitable dark humour.
The teases of other projects are well done, not just a tease, but a good story, giving you enough to be invested, but also allowing readers to want to see where they go next.
It’s a large-sized comic too, with a decent amount within and it performs the anthology route for me perfectly. My idea of a good anthology is that it will have something for everyone to enjoy. It’s like a circus - if you don’t like the clowns, you may like the acrobats!
For some reason, I am drawn towards more horror reading at this time of year1, and this fits in perfectly to it all.
It's an excellent read for the darker months.
