3MY Round-Up: Social Media & More
Where I am with the changing faces of Social Media with 3 Million Years & more
In The Beginning
Things seem to be moving in strange ways in social media. Twitter has not, at the time of writing, exploded and fallen down. Nevertheless, people seem to be preparing themselves. Like social media doomsday preppers, we are battering down the hatches and getting ready for the crash.
Even if this doesn’t happen, it does seem like there was a seismic shift towards other apps. Mastodon seems to be doing well and has had many signups, but recently there has been a lot of activity on Hive. each of these has some good points. The decentralisation of Mastodon is interesting as long as they are appropriately moderated. Hive looks to have some good ideas but is only app-based at the moment.
So this is where I, 3 Million Years and Custard Comix are across the web.
You can find me on Mastodon here, as well as my long-running Twitter account here. Custard Comix has its Gumroad store here and is represented on Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook. 3 Million Years also has its own Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr pages. On top of that, as I can’t link to it, I am on Hive as MichaelJNimmo
*Phew*
I really hope that there are no more new social media networks for a while…
Comic News
Band Of Bards has announced a new five-issue mini-series called Monsters & Midways. It’s based in the 1970s rock scene.
Coming in January 2023 is a selection of new comics from Red 5 Comics.
Coming in December is the second issue of the excellent Boom Bandits. Check out the details at the link and also the link to my review below.
Mad Cave Studios has announced a new creator-owned series starting in the Spring of next year - Don’t Spit In The Wind.
Some interesting use of technology between Papercutz and The Smurfs, with an augmented reality comic book coming for Free Comic Book Day next year.
Continuing their horror theme, Archie Comics has a new anthology comic coming soon in Betty: The Final Girl.
Rebellion has announced that the second volume of the adventure of Strontium Dog, Johnny Alpha, is coming in early 2023.
From Vault Comics, there are some new titles and returns coming in 2023, some of these five are spin-offs, and some are new.
In some exciting news, Comicker Digital has a new owner. Hopefully, this means more creator-owned stories and more to come!
Round-Up
There’s been a lot of Star Wars-related reading I’ve been doing the last couple of weeks. to be honest, Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra have both been my favourite series, with some unique stories and some nice links. In Doctor Aphra there has been a return of a couple of favourite characters of mine too.
With the Crimson Dawn storyline running underneath it though, we have had some additions, with a very good Hidden Empire #1.
Outside of the usual Marvel fare, I have also been enjoying Predator and Alien, both have some excellent stories being told.
I mentioned receiving the book in a previous round-up, but now you can read the excellent Brigantia on Amazon/ComiXology.
Brigantia is a fantasy comic book series about a pagan goddess from ancient, pre-Roman Britain, thrust into the modern day. Dropped into modern London and cut off from the tribe that worshipped her, Brigantia must enlist the aid of new followers to defeat her nefarious brother Veteris, who has spent centuries feasting on the fear of Britain's people and gathering his strength.
Crowdfunding
There is an excellent selection of crowdfunding projects to check out from Kickstarter, Crowdfundr and Zoop online right now. These are Blessed Cure, Nord, Monkeys Fighting Robots, The Whistling Skull & Ku-Mighty.
In some weirder crowdfunding news, there are odd discrepancies for a large Kickstarter project that, at the time of writing, is yet to deliver…
Since writing this, there have been some photos online of what looks like the 22-page special, but nothing on the larger book - physical or digital. I do hope that this book does come through.
Spotlight
Featured in the crowdfunding above, I had a read of the tough Blessed Cure. It is a difficult read and is really heartfelt. Certainly worth checking out.
Special Offers & Sales
Europe Comics has a Black Friday sale on until the 30th November. With 300 titles and a wide selection of reading. I’m sure there is something for everyone there.
Received
Four new comics this past two weeks.
From Quindrie Press is Tilt: Six Tales, with some excellent stories that should entertain all. I love this anthology and hope to see more from these creators. You can get it on their online shop here.
Debut is another anthology from Clan Comics, bringing together Scottish creators. Follow them on Kickstarter here.
A special ashcan of Mugshots: Sins Of The Father. Teasing the upcoming story for 2023, this is a great read, with some fantastic art by Jordan Thomas and Chris Matthews.
And from Afterlight Comics is The Safe House - the beginning of a new thriller. This draws you in deeply and then prepares you for what is to come!
Reviews
From Image Comics is the final issue of Prodigy: The Icarus Society, with some nice teases of future stories to come…
On top of this, The Magic Order 3 comes to its penultimate part.
From Rebellion, there are two issues of 2000 AD to check out, with a great mix of stories.
There are two reviews for one from Vault Comics, West of Sundown continues with a new arc, and some more horror begins in Door To Door, Night By Night.
Zenescope Entertainment has a selection of new releases featuring Belle, Van Helsing, and Robyn Hood.
Funding now is Nord, and I had a chance to review this excellent Nordic mythology story.
